I both like and dislike television, but there's honestly very few shows that I can always stomach. The Simpsons, Futurama, King of the Hill, and South Park for animated, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Breaking Bad, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and most of the Norman Lear-produced shows for live. I've probably forgotten a few for each category, but those are all the ones that stand out in my mind right now.
The thing I like about television is that unlike movies, because most shows last only 30-60 minutes (counting commercials), writers are able to put more focus on stories/story lines allotting for the shortened time frames. I love Breaking Bad because of the excellent writing (and of course acting, but that's another story), and how I'm able to see the detail and care in every aspect of the show and how it flows. What's that due to? Writing. It's harder to praise strong writing in animated shows as a whole, but it's evident in the longevity of the show and how it presents itself.
I dislike television because now, any moron can get themselves a television show, and most of them are the same thing. Every teen/tween star(let) gets their own show on Nickelodeon/Disney, every comedian gets their own comedy on TBS/FOX/NBC, and every B-list, hack celebrity, or person who was on a different reality show gets their own reality show, whether it's looking for a mate, money, or more fame. So much emphasis is put on cranking out the same old successful shit over and over again, it's easy to be disillusioned with television. I myself can't stand it when my brothers turn on VH1 or MTV (remember when it actually used to play music videos?) to watch the newest dating show or Nickelodeon for "ICarly".
