Summer Olympics 2008

^^^
Look at those hardworking Chinese citizens crank out another millions sweaters for the Fall Fashion season. They will be appearing on the WalMart shelves in about a week, I suspect..

I'm looking forward to the Soccer, the Swimming (is always good), the volleyball (womens of course) and the tennis....most importantly the tennis. That gold medal (IMHO) is the most prized posession an athlete of ANY KIND could ever obtain. If I were a pro athlete, I would want a gold medal, especially in the sports where it's single athletes, more than any other prize on the planet.

Ninety..aren't you a little jaded over the worth of a gold medal? Isn't a $50 mil contract more important to a Pro Athlete today?

The Olympics were much more interesting and important, for America, when we only sent our amateurs to compete. Today, we send our pros, and too often, they dope up on BALCO shit and get stripped of their medals....

It was much "funnier" when we could laugh at the East German ManWomen and the Chinese ManWomen back in the day when they sent these cooked-up-in-a-lab sports teams to compete...sadly, WE BECAME THEM!

Whether you'd rather watch gymnastics or beach volleyball depends on whether you prefer teens or MILFs :1orglaugh

More eye candy in the tennis, pole vault, high jump and indoor volleyball events.

... watch out for the Polish team! :nanner:

Polish girls are so incredibly hot. I had the fortune of meeting a real (from the homeland) Polish girl not long ago and I was stunned. Really nice looking women. :hatsoff: Then again, that probably goes for all Euro hotties...

A gold medal says: You are the greatest athlete in the WORLD. It carries a lot of weight. It means a great deal.

I'm with you on the part about the pros. The only thing is, when the other countries with marginal chances of winning sports like basketball started sending their pros, our country felt obligated to do the same, I think.

^True enough.

Separate note:
Which Olympic sport is truly a test to determine "The World's Greatest Athlete?"
Is it a TrackNField event? Gymnastics? Swimming?

Side note concerning the pro /amateur thingy:

It never was fair because the Communist Countries always were allowed to send their best athletes (since they weren't considered pros - there was no professionalism in the Warsaw Pact countries to begin with!)

The only sports to allow hypocrisy nowadays are football/soccer and baseball. These two don't have their best athletes compete at Beijing, which is really odd.

Every other sport has always had its best and brightest nourished by doing well in competitions (whether they were called "amateurs" or "pros")

{Boxing is a notable exception ... with a reason!}

I dig the Olympics ... it's always been the breeding ground of true heroes:

... Nurmi, Owens, Bikila, Spitz, Comaneci, Teofilo Stevenson, Ottey, Cathy Freeman...

Dicky--wouldn't you say that the reason the "world" doesn't send their best soccer teams is because the continental Europe leagues are about to begin their professional seasons and Pro Clubs wouldn't allow their athletes to be released? The Big European Clubs are normally outfitted with starting players for national teams...you can't have backup players qualify for Champion's League, FA Cup, etc.

Basketball is in the off-season. The pros go. Not enough countries play Baseball. Not enough "rich" countries play cricket.

^^ the main reason we don't see the best football players competing at the Olympics is, that FIFA is afraid to diminish the significance of the World Cup.

As long as the Olympics outshine World Championships (in any sport), we won't see the most talented soccer players at the Summer Games.

There's plenty of countries that play baseball, especially in Latin America and Asia. The problem with baseball is the same thing you mentioned for soccer; it's in the middle of the season.

what the fuck you lookin at?
Well I'm a pervert too, then! There's something about tiny, super flexible girls in skin tight leotards, which usually show great camel toes, jumping around and showing off how flexible they are. I'd LOVE to get my hands on one of them!

 why am I laughing when I agree 100% :glugglug:

flylicker ... ah...um...na, not gonna even say it...

I'm not sure the geographic spread is "enough" for baseball in the Olympics, Gunslinger. No countries in Africa play it. None of the "big Latin" countries play it--Brazil, Argentina, Colombia...I think Holland is the only Euro country that fields a competitive team...It would help if Germany/France/U.K. played it.

What are the teams that have actually good teams this year? The only ones I can think of are Cuba, the US, and Japan. Everyone else has an outside shot at getting a medal, I think. It's the damn soccer. No other sport can become huge in Europe cause of f'n soccer.

But yeah, titsrock is right. Three of the teams this year come from North America (US, Cuba, Canada), four come from Asia (Japan, South Korea, ROC, and China as the host nation). Only one comes from Europe.

The problems are... (as you've already stated)

a) MLB is in mid-season

b) too little countries care about baseball...

... it will be scrapped from the Olympic schedule in 2012. This is the last time it is an Olympic event...

... I sincerely hope, it will be replaced by Rugby or Golf - truely global sports...

I think when you are supposed to think greatest athlete in the world it is the one who is the best at heptathalon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heptathlon :dunno:

The olympics is a special time of the years(s) for me, because I am a multi-sport athlete. I respect it a lot and it means a lot to me.

I want to see golf in the next Olympics. There is a lot of mixed opinion on whether or not it will be, however. Womens softball is being srcapped next Olympics though. US dominates far too much.

Shit...baseball is already an Olympic sport. I actually didn't know that! I can't recall any coverage about the U.S. team's chances...I guess I thought baseball was dropped from the Summer games?

Yahoo hasn't bothered to even list the countries competing in the baseball competition. I can't say who they are but my guess is the geographic spread is very tight....

I think Indoor Soccer (futsal) should be an Summer Olympic sport, Golf definitely SHOULD be!! maybe Polo too?

I just watched them play China. Great game. Exciting. The Canadian Women's team is LOADED WITH HOTTIES....talented hotties. I really liked how that white Canadian uniform showed off their sports bras and thongs when they got sweaty! Yeehaw!!

They said it several times over durring the opening ceremony how countries like Cuba and Domican are pissed this year because baseball is not a part of the Oplympics this year. Therefore, it is not an event this year.
