Summer Olympics 2008

Take a Hit, Spunker!
Well, they just showed the women's vault final, the last event for Alicia Spankthatbummy, and I thought it was a total rip off. They gave the bronze medal to the Chinese girl that landed on her knees on the dismount of her second vault. Alicia's vaults were all but perfect. She should've gotten the bronze, not the Chinese girl. If that doesn't show favoritism for the home country, I don't know what does. I really wish that someone would do something to stop the blatant favoritism for China which has been more than obvious throughout the Olympics. :2 cents:

I knew about Alicia Squeezehertitties screw job for hours now, but I decided not to spoil it for you G. I feel so bad for her, I really do. I hope she comes back in 4 years to try again, but who knows. I'm still proud of her for the effort she put in!

No shit! The only event I saw that they actually deserved the gold was the synchronized diving, both springboard and platform. They were next to flawless in those events.

^^^Its like that with every host nation, there is always a national bias towards the home athlete, its up to the rest of the athletes to prove they are better and rise above it.

Just wait for London 2012, I can see us winning the 100m. Bias is Englands middle name, just look at the BAFTAs.

Well...sportsmanship and "the Olympic ideal" took it on the chin in the USA vs China baseball game today. This is a shameful display by both teams and coaches. I am very happy baseball is getting sacked for future Olympics.

I can't wait for US Women's Soccer vs Brazil this coming Thursday for the Gold. Should be A HELL OF A MATCH. Set your phasers on "WHOA" and root for the Red White and Blue!

Are the Olympics not on live anymore? The past fews Ive been tuning in at 11pm (West Coast time) and always noticed the "live" at the top of the screen. Now I tune it and its not there anymore.

Some are on tape delay. Of course you could always go on the website and find out when they're going to be on :dunno:

I wonder why all the rankings are based on the number of gold medals instead of total number of medals?!

You got it right, Maildude.

It's only GOLD that's counts.
Therefore, China is no 1.
Sorry, I don't like it either. Too much judge decisions in advantage of Chinese sporters and gymnastics that seems to be under age (16 years of age is the minimum for gymnastics.)

Yep, Chris Hoyd was awesome. 3x Gold!
The Dutch were very dissapointed, the only medal was Gold for Marianne Vos, but she's a natural winner.

I just went to the Yahoo website and they had the gold winner for tonights gymnastics already posted.

In related news, they should have a disclaimer for this thread posted as "spoiler alert." You guys are posting before we even know the results. :scream:

Its always like that, it was the same in Athens 04, only Gold medals are counted, the more gold you have the better in the table you do, you could win 60 medals but none of them gold and you would be in mid table.

I see the point.

But, a medal is medal whether it's gold or not. I think total number of medals should be the main criterion of ranking. The more medal you won, the more effort you had put, this should be awarded as a whole.

I'm not hammering on China or IOC or any of you who support this system. This system sees silver and bronze medalists as a trash and doesn't really involve them into international ranking.

I wish US women soccer team top the gold and own China with a mass golden attack. :D

A medal still holds a lot of weight, regardless of color, in certain events.

Gold medals aren't a good indicator to go by either. Lets face it, not all gold medals are equal. Some are not even close. There is no way things like badminton, ping pong (Technically table tennis, but it will always be ping pong to me) or air rifle shooting are anywhere near as prestigious as swimming, track and field, or any of the other more major sports. I think it says a lot more for a country to have a gold in the 100 meter dash, the decathlon, the 4X100 freestyle relay, or weightlifting than in singles table tennis for example. That was one of the reasons the Chinese guy not being able to do the 110 meter hurdles was such a blow to them. Overall I say our gold medals are much more prestigious than the ones the Chinese have. They beat us in men's gymnastics and maybe women's gymnastics (Even then you would have to discount the fact there was a bunch of questionable judging in it and there's a controversy about some of the Chinese girls ages.) in the things we seriously compete head to head in.

BTW...as long as they want to get rid of softball and baseball how about they get rid of table tennis and badminton while there at it to.
