Sex domain gets official approval

Finally, all the porn in the world under... well one top-level domain (TLD). :)

Soon this site will be board.freeones.xxx methinks.

Official approval has been given for the creation of an internet domain dedicated to pornography.

The board of net overseer Icann gave initial approval for the creation of the .xxx domain at its conference in Brussels.

Icann's approval will kick off a fast-track process to get the porn-only domain set up.

ICM Registry, which is backing the domain, said .xxx would make it easier to filter out inappropriate content.

The decision ends a long campaign by ICM Registry to win approval.

Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM, welcomed the decision and said it was "great news for those that wish to consume, or avoid, adult content".

Porn police

Icann, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, said the next step would be talks with ICM Registry to ensure that it still had sufficient backing from the adult industry to justify its creation.

Icann oversees the net's addressing system and demands that new top level domains, such as .biz, must be "sponsored" in that they must serve the needs of a defined community.

ICM has said it expected the first .xxx domains to go live in early 2011. It said it had more than 110,000 pre-reservations for .xxx domains.

During the debate on approval, Icann board members said mistakes had been made in denying approval before now.

The denial was "not consistent with the application of neutral, objective and fair documented policy".

Some board members said they were personally "uncomfortable" with the decision to approve .xxx but could not block it because ICM had followed Icann's rules for setting up a new top-level domain.

Initial approval for .xxx was given in 2005 but this was rescinded following protests from politically conservative groups. Icann also said it was worried that it would be asked to police content - a role it was not created for.

In February 2010, a panel of US judges said Icann erred in denying the approval of the domain. Icann accepted that ruling and began a public consulation process on whether the domain should be approved.

Nice - now they can keep track of YOU easier - don't let them bullshit you!

I can't say I like the idea. That makes it all too easy for ISP's to block porn sites if they all share the same TLD.

That is correct. Countries like Pakistan and China will have a field day. In the rest of the world, I don't think there would be an ISP crazy enough to ban the .xxx and lose half of it's subscribers, if not more. Apart from that, I like the idea of porn/sex community finally being acknowledged.

Most of the internet IS pornography and a lot of technology was developed for and indirectly by pornography. What more acknowledgment does the porn/sex community need?

Allow me to disagree with that. Most of the internet is not porn. There are alot of other stuff out there...

Anyways. I personally like it. :)

Depends upon your definition. In terms of individual sites, etc., perhaps not. In terms of data size, it absolutely is, both in terms of storage and xfer.

I have to think it would have been easier to create the ".np" domain for Not porn.

Wonder if the first url applied for was "xxx.xxx"?

Exactly! That's all this is about. Now the Evangelical wingnuts and the rad feminists can join hands and sing a song of joy together.

why not offer all religious sites the .+++ ending and WE can ban them ^^

12% of the Internet is pornographic. Not even close to a majority.

so now it will be freeones.xxx?

Not unless the people behind FreeOnes want it to be. There's no impetus with this new domain to change over if you've got a .com/.org. The only real reason this new domain exists in the first place is to widen the amount of sites that are pornographic and want common domain names (i.e. sex.xxx, porn.xxx, and a myriad of others).

I read an article saying that most current sites will be grandfathered in to .com if they wish, which will kind of defeat the purpose of blocking .xxx domains. Also, sites could just buy up .xxx domains and have them forward people to the .com versions of their sites. This is really just to open up a lot of new internet "real estate" that some people feel they can monetize. I mean, who wouldn't want to sit on brazzers.xxx and then tell the owners of brazzers.com, just as an example, that they would have to buy the domain from them for $1 million.

I think a lot of what people fear, and in my opinion it's a legitimate fear, is that over time governments will twist things to require sites that have adult material to have that domain extension. It's a lot easier for somebody to ban a whole domain like that than to go through and ferret out every site on the Internet. It will make censorship, regulation, and keeping tabs on people that much easier for them.

See, but the problem is that would have to be a wider scope than just the government of the United States. There are other countries that correlate to domains, so forcing porn sites to register with a .xxx domain would essentially require one of two things: A. a global initiative to take this action or B. The US would basically have to create it's own subset of the Internet and rebuild the entire Internet as we know it.
