Scientology, exactly how weird is it?

Still I don't see how you can look at Scientology as any different from other religions other than Scientology's youth. What we know for certain is that the Bible was written by people. Whether or not people think what's written in the Bible is bullshit really has nothing to do with the comparison. Age doesn't lend what's written in the Bible credibility, and what is written in the Bible is no less fantastic than anything Scientology teaches. The reason people don't look at things like burning, speaking bushes and virgin births and resurrections from death as insane is that these teaching have been ingrained and conditioned into our psyche over the course of thousands of years. Hubbard's teachings have not been. Hubbard was probably (definitely, in my view, but...) a crackpot--okay. But that doesn't mean the people who dreamed up the wild content of the Bible were any less of a group of crackpots. So, we have two religions--Christianity and Scientology--that make fantastical claims that were written by people. One is old and one is new. But other than that, where is the difference?

The difference is that Judaism and Christianity are religions that were pieced together throughout an age when there was no science to rival it. People were no different than we are today...they wanted to know the answers to the universe's riddles. Religion provided those answers. Unfortunately, there was no alternative back then.

Scientology, on the other hand, was created during the height of scientific discovery and understanding. It didn't provide answers to common questions; instead it claimed to provide a sacred knowledge based on commitment and loyalty. You learn as you pay. You become more powerful and aware as you pay.

I despise all religion, but with ancient polytheism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, everything is laid out on the table and its origins were credible at the time. And they were created from tenets of previous belief systems and multiple generations of people; some gullible but good intentioned, some motivated only by self interest, but none by a single man or organization. A far cry from things like Scientology and Mormonism.

There are scriptures in the bible which contend the world was round and suspended from nothing. There are other things as well which went against the sciences of the time. Just saying.

Of course. I'm not defending any religion. I'm just saying the ancient religions were largely based on surviving traditions and explanations of the great mysteries.

Judaism is what, 1,300 years old? And largely based on previous Sumerian and Egyptian beliefs. That predates Hellenistic Greece by nearly a millennium. The problem is that these religions didn't bend when the creation myths were made obsolete by discovery. But at their earliest period, they provided answers that were as good as any other. If you look at all the world's creation myths, you can see very familiar patterns and ways of thinking. Nearly every culture has a story similar to Noah's Arc. It was how primitive man filled in the blanks.

Still, that's a completely separate ****** than a single man, living in the golden age of science, creating some hokey, Lovecraftian science fiction faith that he knows he could sell to idiots.

My Penis Is Dancing!
Scientologists mare a bunch of nutjobs.

Then again, I could say the same for people who believe that everything was created by some being who suddenly woke up and created said all out of nothing, pulled a woman from a dude's rib and encouraged them to inbreed to create a new race, got pissed at that race and drowned almost all of them, the created a *** to spread his word and be ****** as punishment.

Legzman

what the fuck you lookin at?
no worse than any other religious group. Full of extreme incompetence...

Sweet Zombie Jesus!

I heard BlueBalls rejected it because it was too weird. When something like that happens you you know to stay away from it.

There is also strong circumstantial evidence that Scientology was created as a tax shelter, (not to mention all the money siphoning it does) and for some reason people were gullible enough that some people actually believe it. Whether one believes in them or not at least with all the worlds major religions and even most of the non-widespread ones they most likely came about by people that really believed in them.

Sometimes? Where have you been? Try all the time.

I don't agree with Scientology, but the government is to stay out of people's religious beliefs and many other things.

As long as they aren't hurting others, they are allowed to do as they please.

...define hurting others.

ALL religions are bullshit. Or NONE is.
If they just leave me alone they can believe in what they want. If they don´t they have a serious problem.
I´d prefer to say all of em are bullshit, cause of religions we had a bunch of wars on the planet none needs .
In my eyes today´s religions are * power, money, energy * ..and the war´s are * covered * under the * coat * of religion.

^ dude...did you just say Bush invaded Iraq due to religion?

Exactly. The problem with religions lie in their very core. If you put your fate and the decisions you make into the hands of a higher being, and in the sayings of people who wandered around in the desert high on ***** and living a life radically different of us, you are accepting making yourself a puppet.

And there is genocide and other horrors in both Islamic and Christian and Jweish texts, each have stated it cristal clear it's gods wish to erase other groups - down to women and ********.

I am reading the bible now, cover to cover, to check back and as I am halfway through the Book of Genesis, I have found so much of it, Christians for one need to stfu about Muslims needing to get their act together.

Give Jesus a haircut and a business suit, and you got your Scientologist ***** guy :2 cents:
