Scientology, exactly how weird is it?

first of all, i'm all for the to each their own philosophy. some people enjoy taking it up the pooper, some people put ketchup on potatoes and some people think football is a game where you can grab the ball with your hands.

but in all honesty, what is the matter with all these cults. i mean i can accept that a few people here and there aren't fully functional in their heads. but seeing scientology (for example) and how it manages to attract people despite having the most absurd messages.
i can understand a religion that has two millenias of constant presence in culture and politics manages to get people into believing. but how can anyone even begin to feel connected to what mr Hubbard was preaching about?

well i could go on forever, because it amazes me. but to the point: do you also find scientology extremely stupid? i'll leave it to the poll and for you to reply

edit: i forgot to make the poll because i went to the bathroom, let's just talk about it

No one knows exactly how weird it is, you'll have to ask Xenu

Scientology is no different from any other religion.

Except it was formed only 50 years ago so everyone knows where it came from; A crazy science fiction writer.

In my opinion it's extremely different from other religions.

Xenu needs money. I mean.. Jesus is a money-hungry sumbitch, but Xenu elevates it to an artform. Xenu elevates it to his volcano lair. Then brainwashes it and gives it to Tommy Cruise. lol

They accepted Tom Cruise to their "religion".

They killed Chef.

Germany banned them. Go Germany!

On an episode of South Park they explained what Scientologist believe.
Scientology was created and written by a Science Fiction writer.

How is it different from other religions (aside from it's relative youth)?

As a whole, it isn't unlike any other religion, as all religions are just a system of beliefs and practices which have been set up in order to make daily life more tolerable and meaningful to people.

The set of beliefs, however, are very different than that of any other religion, IMO.

Most religions don't truly accept the practice of science into their everyday lifestyle and Scientology uses an E-meter, which is a blatant crossover between "science" and religion (I quoted the word "science" as the E-meter is nothing but a joke and there is nothing truly scientific about it).

Plus, the religion of Scientology doesn't state that a god created man, as they believe humans are immortal.

scientology is like reinventing the wheel but making it square.

to me none of them makes sense, but at least the old religions or their branches have some kind of cultural value and mysticism behind them -- which is one good reason to why they make better life-styles than scientology.

scientology was, 100% certainly, the idea of ONE man two generations ago. none of it makes any sense (spiritual or scientific) other than sucking money from its members. that itself is not very baffling or unique.
what is however is that it attracts so many people, including this bunch of celebrities, who I don't look up to as role models but somehow they ought to think their decisions through more than the average joe seeing as they have constant surveillance up their butt. yet they still bow down to this crap, and to me it makes no sense! unless they make money or gain something from it, but so far I've never heard of anything like that. more like the opposite.

sometimes the media twists things and exaggerates things

but this isn't one of these times, all that xenu and energy crap, is what they actually believe

freedoms is all good a fine, but a government should sometimes step in and completely abolish all cults

Sometimes? Where have you been? Try all the time.

I don't agree with Scientology, but the government is to stay out of people's religious beliefs and many other things.

As long as they aren't hurting others, they are allowed to do as they please.

Anyone who thinks christians, jews, and muslims are any less wacko than scientologists needs to have their head examined. It's all make believe people.

The only reason many people don't view the established religions in the same way they view Scientology is because the established religions have been around for many, many years. Any perceived "cultural value or mysticism" is the byproduct of no one being alive when the established, old religions were thought up by one man or one woman or a group of people. Only the age of accepted religions and a lifetime of indoctrination makes the claims of the Bible or Koran or Torah etc more acceptable/palatable/believable than Scientology's claims.
