I post links of Gorbachev's comments on Russia's current government and his hopes for future democracy in Russia. Stephen Cohen has a more neutral stance on the current Russian government, but he's right about the Putin Presidency stabilizing Russia during the earlier 2000s.

I like Gorbachev's vision, but if Trump is elected...

What amazes me is the bizarro world of contemporary American conservatism. The degree of ignorant, irrational hatred and fear of Obama is such that a substantial percentage of conservatives are actually fawning all over Putin. Many even wish he was our president LOL This despite the fact he was a KGB trained spy, is a ********, a pathological liar, has expansionist goals and is corrupt as the day is long. This is unprecedented as an element of American conservatism, and Putin must just be reveling in it. In the past these very same Putin fans would have labelled any Americans holding such views as notorious traitors.

Gorbachev is a liberal at heart. My Russian friends have told me on many occasions, that USSR would've survived if Leonid Brezhnev and/or Yuri Andropov lived a few more years, and made political and economic reforms. Russia's Muslim population is almost 20 million, and to my knowledge, Putin has never spoken a detrimental word about Islam. The ****** talk is just anti Kremlin BS. Gorbachev supports Russia's annexation of Crimea. Boris Yeltsin created Russia's current system. Putin wasn't powerful enough to challenge the Russian oligarchs during first 6 to 7 years of his presidency. Putin took the easy way out, but the corrupt system has vastly improved each Russian standard of living. Today, Putin has to control corruption in Russia. Many Russian experts believe corruption takes $100 billion dollars out of the Russian economy each year. The American media, academic, diplomat, and political need stop calling Russian liberals the opposition to Putin. The Russian Communist party is the real opposition to Putin and his United Russia party. The Russian Communists are against most of our policies, so we vastly over state Russian liberal support in Russian society. Russia is a very conservative country; the Russian gay rights fight will be long and hard. Russian birth rates have rebounded, but Russia needs more immigrants. Russian immigration will be interesting in the next few decades. Circassians, Tajiks, and Uzbeks would flood into Russia given the opportunity. But most of them are Muslim, and Russia's Muslim population may become the majority by the next century.

Russia needs a rival second party that keeps United Russia from having a blanket check in the State Duma. Its looks like Communist Party will make major gains in the September elections.

I think ECFR and other think tanks are just U. S. and its allies mouthpieces. The think tanks get their funding from pro U.S. governments, and defense companies. But I want to be transparent, so a link to ECFR about Russia in 2030

Once the permafrost melts in Siberia and the Russian Far East in the coming decades. Russia will become world's bread basket. The Lena, Ob, Yenisei, and Amur river systems are among largest on Earth.
