Rare giant squid washed up in Australia

I just got done reading this story man this squid is huge 33 feet in length and weighs 606 pounds :eek:

I saw that, that's like the 3rd one recently and I thought they were considered to be non existant.

Yeah, I remember a couple of other ones around the same time those two prehistoric sharks were found. Weird, wild stuff.

I was under the impression that it was twice or even three times as big

Well, comparing it to the guys foot, there is no way the main mantle is one meter. Unless his feet are gigantic.

We must keep in mind too that its a Squid not an Octopus. I think with movies these days and giant everything in them, some of us just aren't shocked with certain things. Sometimes not thinking, "Wow, this one is real" just thinking "I've seen bigger".

I think the squid would seem bigger if it were immersed in water.
I suspect that it's mass would have decreased due to dehydration.

The scientific term for that is "Shrinkage".
