Nope. Every Final Fantasy stands on their own. You can play Final Fantasy XIII and enjoy it without having to know a previous 12+ sequels.

Not at all! Final Fantasy XIII like all the other Final Fantasy games are stand alones. They do not connect to any other one plot wise or character wise.

You can play whichever one you want and have a good time with no missing plot points or pieces
