TAMPA BAY – Tampa Bay Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Jay Feaster announced today that John Tortorella will not return next season as the team’s head coach. Tortorella has one season remaining on his contract.

“This has been a very difficult decision because of everything that John Tortorella has meant to and done for this organization,” Feaster said. “Torts came to Tampa and not only built the foundation under our club but he also changed the culture and raised the expectations, eventually leading us to the Stanley Cup in 2004. What he accomplished during his tenure in Tampa was nothing short of remarkable and our organization will always owe him our thanks, gratitude and deep respect.”

“At the same time, we need to look to the future of the both the club and the organization, and we must make decisions with the future in mind. John was entering the final year of his contract and extending his contract was not a viable option. Having him enter and coach the season in a lame duck status was not something I was prepared to recommend to ownership.

“John Tortorella is a very good hockey coach and an even better person. By making this decision now, both the existing and incoming ownership groups are attempting to give John every opportunity to pursue the numerous head coaching vacancies that exist throughout the League. We thank John for his many years of loyal and dedicated service to our franchise and our community and we wish him and his family every continued personal and professional success.”

next year is looking good!

I think the change was needed . I will always respect Torts for what he did for the Tampa Bay Lightning but it was time to let him go . So with a new coach , Steve Stamkos and maybe some free agents to complete the team , next season looks very promising .

I wanted the Pens to win, but all in all, the stronger team won. I think the Pens played sloppy all the last 6 games, and this series was kinda boring?

Well, at least we got 6 games. The 6th game was a great one at that. :wave2:

My early favorite for next year: the Pens. This team is going to be pretty damn good if they keep that nucleus.

I wanted the Penguins to win because of Crosby, but all in all the Red Wings were the better team and they deserved to win the Stanley Cup

This is the city of Detroit we're talking about here. You have to figure they needed to be thrown a bone in some way, and at least they have the Cup this year. :1orglaugh

Congrats to all the Wings fans on the board! :shy: :glugglug:

Now, to a story that PISSED ME OFF today ...

Hockey Night In Canada to change theme song after 40 years :crash:

This story just played on NPR here in the states. What a crock of shit. It made me fucking weep as I drove home listening to the story as the song played in the background. There is no way the CBC- (government owned) will be able to withstand the political firestorm this is going to generate. Some things you just don't mess with. What's next, Tim Hortons going out of business.

It's just as bad as Foster Hewitt winner Mike Lange getting fired by Fox Sports Pittsburgh two years ago and being exiled to radio. STUPID STUPID STUPID! :crash:

Best HNIC theme version I could find (apparently from 2005-2006). :2 cents:
