Another solid win by the Pens over the Panthers 5-2. My Penguins totally dominated the Panthers in the 1st, and ran Vokoun in the 1st period (2nd straight game they ran the starter). The Pens really settled down the rest of the game, and solid net minding really kept the Panthers from really being able to get back into the game!
Johnson suffered an injury, and Fleury had to come in to play the 3rd though. Lovejoy got his first NHL goal, but he left with an injury after taking a puck to the face late in the 3rd. That ****** his chances of scoring a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick." He got the goal and the fight, but he never got the assist tonight. Crosby got a goal to extend his scoring streak to 22 (29 away from Gretzky's record of 51), but Malkin failed to score a goal for the 1st time in 4 games (since his return from his injury). If Johnson's injury is serious, the Pens will have to bring up a goalie from the "baby Pens" for tomorrow night's game against the Caps.....though Fleury is sure to get the start.
The Pens have definitely upgraded their defense from last year. Currently, they have the best penalty **** in the league, and are 3rd in goals against & shots against (per game). I was sad to see Gonchar go, but it looks like Martin and company are a vast improvement from what we had before! Defense isn't something Pens teams are generally known for, so this fact is a pleasant surprise!
Even better, the win tonight moves the Pens to within 1 point of the Flyers for 1st in the division, conference, and league! On to D.C. for what should be an excellent game tomorrow night! Decided to watch the Pens game & join the Steelers game in progress....ha ha ha!
