Navy intercepts russian bomber

Why, Thank You, Bodie. :hatsoff:

Boy was I off the mark on the number of crew members :o

By a multiple of 3 !! :o

Media making a big deal about nothing ...

It was a single Bear bomber buzzing a US CVN. No big deal. It's just a return to those olden days.

Now if there were a coordinated set of Bear bombers en-route to multiple US carrier groups at the same time, you can be sure the US Navy would be on the horn to the President, and the President to Moscow. Now that would be something to get excited about!

I don't think Russia would be that stupid though. They weren't during even the worst of the Cold War either.

The TU-95 "Bear" is a counter-rotating turbo-prop driven aircraft that was prevalent during the same era as the old obsolete B-47 from mid-1950s.
Actually, the Tu-95 is still one of the greatest engineering feats. Despite being prop driven, it's one heck of a design with a workhorse of a history. It's basically Russia's pride like our B-52, old, ugly, but damn good at what it does.

I seriously doubt that this is the machine that Russia would choose to launch WWIII with!
Actually, it would be "the follow up."

But yes, the lack of a long-range bomber is why the USSR went after ballistic missiles as their launch platform, while the US didn't for quite awhile. The difference was that the US quickly "caught up," using a combination of superiority in guidance and miniturized nukes.

LOL....we have more to fear from renegade Afghan rebels than some old Bear making a macho pass over one of our warships.
Agreed. Russia is the nation "rattling its sabers" right now and nothing else. As one US Navy Admiral put it, they just want to be "respected" again.

Laughable....I bet Ivan is already telling all his buds how he buzzed the Nimitz! Buy that man a *****!
You know it! Especially since the Russians only have 1 aircraft carrier the even approaches the size of our fleet of Nimitz class designs. If I was that pilot, that would be very cool to buzz over!

Don't the seemingly invisible, lurking PRC & N. Korean antique diesel + battery powered subs create a potential nightmare wartime scenario for carriers in general ? Old technology slap in the face. :o

The Russians also have TU 22 and TU 160 but the TU 95 must not be undersestimated because it carries very powerful nuclear weapons and anti ship missiles.
