People get paid to play sports due to the income it brings to the city. The higher profile the player...the more income they bring to the city...the more they get paid.

People get paid to play sports because fans find sports interesting enough to watch and in so doing they are willing to pay for the opportunity. In order for fans to watch someone has to facilitate it's happening. It costs facilitators money to do so therefore they charge people to view the exhibition. People pay a fare to see the exhibition live and those who (nowadays) can't witness it live, watch and listen by the millions via t.v. and radio. Since there are now congregated millions of captive audiences at one virtual location, advertisers would like to capitalize on the ability to expose their products to those millions in the captive audience. To do so they pay the facilitator a fee based the amount projected to be in the audience. The entreprenuers who invest in the uniforms, stadiums, players, etc. which creates a product for the facilitators to exhibit and the fans to follow expect to be paid by fans and facilitators to watch and display their product. Now if the owners and facilitators are being paid by fans (indirectly and directly) for their parts in bringing this product to the fan, certainly the performers want their "fair" share of the ransom too. Otherwise, what would be their motivation to continue to provide the entertainment?
