Good read! I already figured most of this out, but show your ****. These are the games we grew up on that spawned an entire multibillion dollar industry! Without these games, video games wouldn't be near what they are today!

Pong and Doom should be on there instead of Ultama and Dune. Ther are far more than just runners up.

I agree pong should be on there. Wolfenstein 3D is the predecessor to DOOM so that's why it isn't on the list.

No Zelda? The list is wrong.

Ultima basically same as zelda and came out way before.

I didn't read much about that game. Looks like the precursor to final fantasy. Still, how many other games take elements from zelda. Great game, I'll give you that, but it's in a genre of it's own.

well to add blake stone came out 3 year before Wolfenstein by the same company that was the first of it type !! and yeah pong should of been on the list, and pac man oh and a star wars one can't remeber the name of it but that change the way that games were made so that should of been on, in my mind the list is a bit wrong in places !! but good topic !!

Metal Gear Solid should be there, 'cause it revolutionized gaming.

I would have thought games like Diablo / Diablo 2, revolutionised on-line playing for MMOs, when people mention on-line play (as in Xbox Live) I remember many months on the BattleNet servers, this was before WoW.

I'd say they got it pretty right super mario, tetris, wolf-3d and half life were the first titles that came to mind when i saw the heading, its now a question of how long before Wii makes a splash onto that list

Wolfenstein 3D is still one of the best games out there.

Grand Theft Auto III? Is that a fucking joke? Since they have Wolfenstein 3D on the list because it spawned games like DOOM and many others, how can they have Grand Theft Auto III and NOT Tony Hawk's Pro Skater? GTA games took their physics straight out of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater...so, without Tony Hawk, there is no GTA style games.

Also, I think that Dragon Warrior shouldn't "just" be a runner-up. It should be on the list. One of the best games ever, IMO.

I remember Dragon Warrior! I LOVED that game!!! First and best RPG I ever played!

What did PoP influenced?

PoP? Every 2D action/exploration game since, and then led up to the 3D kind too. Like G_d of War. :P Prince of Persia led to Flashback.. flashback led to .. well damn, somebody probably has a chart of the evolution of it all, somewhere. Just look for the evolution of that particular genre.

God of War was the first game that came to mind.

IGN make some of the worst lists there is imo.
But I agree with a lot of those games. Maybe not Super Mario 64 though, since that's basically just a very good improvement of the earlier PS-platforms.
And I miss Dragon Quest, but that's not really a famous franchise west of Japan so I'm not surprised they didn't include it.

The playstation was hardly instrumental in establishing 3D games as .. actually VIABLE alternatives to gaming. 2D was still in style back then.. but until a certain few games that all arrived at the same time.. 3D platformers didnt exist.

Crash Bandicoot SCEA 08/31/96
Super Mario 64 Nintendo 09/26/96

And starting a full FIVE years after the fact, the birth of the NEXT GENERATION of platformers. The bar is constantly being raised even now.

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy SCEA 12/03/01
Ratchet & Clank SCEA 11/04/02
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Ubisoft 11/06/03
God of War SCEA 03/22/05

With noticed mention of certain games that just wouldnt be the same if someone hadnt shown the world how a proper 3D game should play:

Metal Gear Solid Konami 09/30/98
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo 11/23/98
Soul Calibur Namco 09/08/99 (Previous 3D fighters being.. what? lol)
Devil May Cry Capcom 10/16/01
