Most influential games

I'm not to sure about Dune 2... I would have thought Civilization would have given a greater impact... I don't know anyone that played Dune 2.

The original Mario Brothers should have been up there instead of the 64 version.

Other than those two, I would say the list is pretty spot on.

i am surprised halo2 isnt on there. it has set the standard for all console online games. from custimising to actual matchmaking. not to mention what it has don for lan tournament gaming. hell it set the standard for all the next gen games. i think it revolutionised the whole way everyone views the at home gamer.

The playstation was hardly instrumental in establishing 3D games as .. actually VIABLE alternatives to gaming. 2D was still in style back then.. but until a certain few games that all arrived at the same time.. 3D platformers didnt exist.

I'm not sure I totally agree with this statement. When PlayStation and Saturn came around,it completely changed everything.Street Fighter was still hugely popular but there was major competition when Virtua Fighter and Battle Arena Toshinden came home.I'm sure if you look it up you will find that game and system sales declined for SNES and Genesis after PS1 and Saturn came out.I guess the only thing that one could argue is that 3D gaming was around for PC well before PS1 and Saturn, but there again, there are and have been way more console gamers than PC gamers over the years,so 3D gaming really did take off with the launch of PS1 and Saturn.

When you guys stop to think about it. PC games have lead the video game technology. I only wish I knew enough about computers and had the money to not only build a high end gaming PC but also to keep it constantly upgraded!

That being said. I'll settle for consoles as that's what I grew up on anyway. PC's have the advantage with graphics any day of the week! Always have always will! Consoles will never pass PCs in regards to performance! It's like comparing apples and oranges.

Crash Bandicoot SCEA 08/31/96
Super Mario 64 Nintendo 09/26/96

And starting a full FIVE years after the fact, the birth of the NEXT GENERATION of platformers. The bar is constantly being raised even now.

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy SCEA 12/03/01
Ratchet & Clank SCEA 11/04/02
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Ubisoft 11/06/03
God of War SCEA 03/22/05

With noticed mention of certain games that just wouldnt be the same if someone hadnt shown the world how a proper 3D game should play:

Metal Gear Solid Konami 09/30/98
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo 11/23/98
Soul Calibur Namco 09/08/99 (Previous 3D fighters being.. what? lol)
Devil May Cry Capcom 10/16/01
Well there's a difference between innovating an entire genre and just making a good game within a genre. Not saying Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time are influential games but I don't think either of them, despite being some of my favorite games, are very innovative.

Maybe I just totally misunderstood the purpose of the list, but SM64 is just one of many 3D-platforms from the 1995-2000 period. As far as I know Premium Link Upgrade was the first game in the genre. And Ocarina of Time was just a much better version of earlier 3D adventure games.

Most N64 games were just upgrades from their PlayStation brethren, but PS and Saturn were often the first in the post-SNES era :)
