Morrissey embroiled in 'racism' row

The Smiths Star Morrissey Embroiled In 'Racism' Row

(Thursday November 29, 2007 12:39 AM)

Singer Morrissey has sparked controversy by claiming British identity has disappeared because the country has been "flooded" by foreigners. The 48-year-old former Smiths star, whose parents were Irish immigrants, suggested that immigration was one of the reasons he would not move back to Britain.

Morrissey, who has spent most of the last decade living in LA and Rome, told NME magazine that countries like Germany still had their own identity and complained of not hearing "British accents" on the streets.

Asked whether he would move back to Britain, he said: "Britain's a terribly negative place. And it hammers people down and it pulls you back and it prevents you.

"Also, with the issue of immigration, it's very difficult because although I don't have anything against people from other countries, the higher the influx into England the more the British identity disappears.

"So the price is enormous. If you travel to Germany, it's still absolutely Germany. If you travel to Sweden, it still has a Swedish identity. But travel to England and you have no idea where you are.

He added: "It matters because the British identity is very attractive. I grew up into it, and I find it quaint and very amusing. But England is a memory now."

He agreed that immigration was enriching the British identity but added "you have to say goodbye to the Britain you once knew".

In a follow-up phone interview, Morrissey told the magazine: "I just think that it could be construed that the reason I wouldn't wish to live in England is the immigration explosion.

"And that's not true at all. I am actually extremely worldly and there are other reasons why I would find England very difficult, such as the expense and the pressure."

He said: "My favourite actor is an Israeli, Lior Ashkenazi, and my favourite singer was born in Iraq and now lives in Egypt. So I'm not a part of Little Britain. And by that, I don't mean the show, obviously."

Asked about his parents moving to Britain, he said: "It's different now. Because the gates are flooded. And anybody can have access to England and join in."

Admitting that he would be "pilloried" for his comments, he added: "You can't say, 'Everybody come into my house, sit on the bed, have what you like, do what you like.' It wouldn't work."

NME wrote: "Morrissey, the son of immigrants who has lived for most of the past decade in either LA or Rome, wants others to have the freedom to travel the world like him, but implies he would shut the gates to people coming to live in the UK.

"He might once have been the voice of a generation, but given his comments in these two interviews, he's certainly not speaking for us now."

It's good to be the king...
So Morrissey, the son of Irish immigrants, is implying that immigration is one of the reasons he wouldn't return to Britain.......

Have to agree with DreamSparrow - always thought his singing sucked.

Oh, and like tartanterrier said, he can stay in LA for all I care...

Sounds to me like hes got it completely right.

Racist or not, it's true.

Yeah and so do i pal 100 %

England = The Land Of Milk & Honey

He's trying to back track now, giving the NME until 1pm GMT to publish an apology or he'll sue and as that time passed a while ago get ready for court

I'm always surprised by the racism in the hearts of the members of my little utopia called Freeones. I don't know why I'm always surprised, because it happens a lot.

****Just a random thought.

But no one here(freeones) will admit they have any racist tendency's or thoughts. But it does come through still.Fox feels it is out in the open more here than England and I'm sure thats true, but I would say to him you should have seen what it was like here 40-50 years ago.It was very much more in the open then with many places having many racially based laws which the civil rights movement was able to get removed. In some ways it was more honest at least the racists didn't deny they way they felt as they do now.I think things have improved in the country but it is still there just not spoken as much in direct ways.

Who the fuck is Morrissey? If he doesn't like the fact that the world is becoming a melting pot he can become a hermit or shoot himself.

The contradictions in Morrissey's position are so very stark that it's almost embarrassing to hear what he has to say. On the one hand he says:

"Although I don't have anything against people from other countries, the higher the influx into England the more the British identity disappears. So the price is enormous."
but on the other:

"It could be construed that the reason I wouldn't wish to live in England is the immigration explosion. And that's not true at all."

If the 'higher influx of people' wasn't supposed to mean immigration, what the hell was it? Twit. If you're going to bother to make political remarks on such a sensitive issue, at least go to the trouble of ensuring they're vaguely logical.

Just to play devil's advocate why does an issue on immigration and racism have to be mutually inclusive? I could see why one would want to stop immigration and not have anything personally against the people coming in. I could see how some people don't want their culture to disappear. Not that I know what they feels like, the USA has never really had it's own culture outside of a few things, but I could see how that might bother some people. Don't think it won't happen. I can see how immigration can cause a whole lot of other problems and the USA does know a lot about that.

Will E Worm

Conspiracy...
I'm not sure if he's racist or if he's just concerned that the culture is being compromised. I wouldn't want to see the British culture diminished.

I only have a problem with illegal immigration.

Eh, it's not the fact that he was referring to immigration that's the issue. Plenty of people discuss it all the time without being labelled as racists. The problem with his comment is that he associated immigration with an assault on British identity. It's a veiled way of saying 'these foreigners have flooded our country and destroyed our way of life'.

Also, political discourse has reached a point in Britain that it's commonly accepted by all parties (with the notable exception of the extreme right-wing BNP and the marginal UKIP) that immigration is actually beneficial to the British economy. The NHS, the country's treasured system of universal healthcare, would simply shut down overnight if not for all the immigrants doing such a great job. So when someone starts claiming that immigration has ruined Britain, it’s a red flag, a warning sign that they’re close to overstepping the bounds.

The three major political parties do discuss the problems associated with immigration. They’ll talk about ensuring immigrants learn to speak English, that British values are shared with newcomers, that appropriate controls/caps on immigration and the like are applied, for the purposes of integration and social cohesion.

But Morrissey's claim goes beyond that -- it instantly echoes the notorious racist Enoch Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech about Brits becoming ‘strangers in their own country’. Saying something like that instantly makes you persona non grata.

I always chuckle when I think of Enoch...... in 1960, Powell was appointed Minister for Health, a department which recruited West Indian nurses. He wasn't objecting to their presence then.

It's funny how nobody objects to foreign migrants (legal or otherwise) when we purchase cheap fresh food in supermarkets or affordable designer clothes. This year, it was claimed the UK strawberry crop was under threat due to a shortage of migrant workers, according to our farmers' union.

In an article in the Telegraph newspaper, a hotelier in Suffolk stated: "I am so dependent on East European staff, I would have to close down if they left."

By all means we should combat illegal immigration - but at the same time we should be asking questions like the following: if the UK has 1.7m unemployed and another 1m claiming incapacity benefit who are actually fit to work (according to Government figures), why is it necessary for companies like First Group, a transport operator, to seek recruitment from Eastern Europe for bus drivers? Or for the National Farmers' Union to fret about a cap on seasonal workers entering the UK?
I don't think we'll like the answer...:2 cents:

PS: Morrissey is to sue the NME after it failed to apologise for an article focusing on his views on immigration.

Have to agree with DreamSparrow - always thought his singing sucked.

He sings?

I always thought it was someone who was just mumbling along to a tune. You know like you do when you are doing something and a tune comes on in the background and you sort of hum and sing it at the same time.

but when half the board is bitching about immigrants and killing them or deporting them etc, esp. the Americans, where are you all then?

Yes some members here moan about immigrants.

Racism and immigration are two completely different issues. Just because you want controls on immigration doesn't mean you are racist. It just mean you actually try to stop a disaster from happening.

Racism is because of what colour or type of person it is. Immigration is about someone wanting to come into your country. You have to weight up all aspects in is it good for the country, can the country cope taking in this person/people.

As for racism is purely based on just labeling them for their colour of their skin, where they come from. Who they are basically and something they can't change.

I'm always surprised by the racism in the hearts of the members of my little utopia called Freeones. I don't know why I'm always surprised, because it happens a lot.

****Just a random thought.

Are we actually getting at racism here or immigration.

As I have someone on this board I call a very good friend. I've seen him been attack for the colour of his skin here. I've also seen him have to endure racist posts here. Just because the small minded racists people who sometimes come to this board assume everyone here is white. They are so small minded that they judge people just because of what they look like and never wait to know the person within that skin colour or labelling.

But to say you don't want the country you live in to be flooded by immigrants and it should be controlled isn't racist. It's called protecting your own interests and the country you live in. Common rights if you like. Because without control on immigration then your country could well end up like the one they have just left. Struggling to survive in every aspect of life.
