London's Mega-Mosque Stirs Controversy.

Britain already has more than 2,000 mosques. No other country in Western Europe has more. Now, London may become home to a mega-mosque and many people are raising a fuss about it. Two hundred thousand people have signed a petition to stop construction. VOA's Mandy Clark reports from London.

The battleground is a derelict piece of land with a makeshift mosque. It is where the ultra-conservative Islamic sect called Tablighi Jamaat plans to build a sprawling $200 million, modern metallic mosque. It would be the largest in the Western world, holding 12,000 people alongside schools and a library. In effect it would be an Islamic village.

But the plan has sparked controversy. Two hundred thousand people, including many moderate Muslims, have signed petitions against the project.

Maybe you have not noticed, but here in Europe, we have something called freedom, where anyone has the right to worship without fear. If the muslims want to build a mosque,I have no prblem with it. If the christians/hindu's/buddist/jewish want to build places of worship, I do not have a problem with it.

Something doesn't seem right to me, or 200,000 other people living there, including Muslims.
Also, the fact that some Muslims are pushing for Islamic Law (Shariah), to be imposed on people that aren't Muslims seems suspicious.

I guess we will see what happens if it is built.

I don't see any substantial argument against it in the video or the article. They've bought a piece of land which is basically unused. So why not?

Anyone who knows the West Ham area will know the whole area's a dump, and in desperate need of regeneration. All that investment will be a good thing. I'm not too convinced on the design though -- Islamic architecture can be beautiful but this futuristic style is a bit shite, IMO.

20,000 people petitioning isn't too surprising, IMO. This is an area of London not at all far from Barking and Dagenham, a constituency where the racist and far right British National Party have seen an enormous rise in popularity. Combine that with those who read xenophobic websites like freerepublic.com (don't let the name fool ya) and 20,000 is a very easy sum to reach.

Of course it doesn't seem right to you. You have no problem living in a land full of Jesus freaks building palaces of Christianity up to the sky and taking money from all the believers, but god forbid someone wants to build a mega mosque in Europe. Hmmm. "Something doesn't seem right" - I think you'll find that's because it's an Islamic something. You wouldn't care if it were a church. There wouldn't even be a thread on it.

I do have a problem with mega-rich Christian pastors.

I personally don't see a point in this, there is only 1 million muslims here in the UK and religious people of all religions in the UK only make up just over half of the population.

If no one can build churches of opposing views in their countries then why should they be allowed to do that to any other country?

Some Muslims are pushing for Islamic Law (Shariah), in London.
Probably other countries too. We will see as things progress.

I know, Western civilization's culture and religion is materialism.
We are indoctrinated by television from an early age to want everything we are told we need.

Brainwashed by the corporate media into being consumers and stop thinking on our own. Because television will tell us how to think.
Workaholics that don't question the government because they know what is best for us.
