A terrible disaster, the level of it illustrated by those pics. March 19 is the date of the "super moon". Astrologers had predicted storms and earthquakes because the moon will be just 221,567 miles away from Earth on that date. Scientists have said there is no connection of this with the Japan Earthquake.

Government officials today announced 9,500 people are unaccounted for in the port of Minamisanriku

I just fear when the 'big one' happens here in California that the devestation will be greater due to years of budget cuts and neglet retrofitting buildings and levees to withstand a major quake better!

Quite a mess but they should have things back in order in no time. A lot of lost lives though.

L.A. is screwed simply by the fact that most of the city is built upon silt soft clay earth which will "liquify" when the quake hits.

My heart goes out to the Japanese people, this is a terrible catastrophic event. The silver lining is that Japan has come back before and is a very industrious country and their people have behaved orderly and admirably.

I finally heard from my sweetie over in Tokyo. She had driven north to Yamagata to check on her parents because cell signals are just swamped and the power issues are causing havoc. But she's home now and I feel much better about that. Holy crap I was worried...
