Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan

I'm reading on Yahoo. Sounds like the quake hit a less-populated area. They described a tsunami with waves 13 feet high. That's not that high. Wrong facts? I dunno...maybe it's high enough. :dunno:

When I first heard about tsunamis and I heard 9ft, in this case 13 ft, I thought the same way. If you surf or seen people surf, you have seen them surf waves a lot higher. A surf wave & a tsumani wave was describe to me this way. Think of a sine wave. A basic wave's signature will look like a condom, it will go up and down pretty quickly. A tsunami's will look more like a brick, it will rise, stay at its peak for a longer time, then drop.

A tsunami wave isn't like a regular wave at a beach. It's better it describe it as a long wide swell where it might not even be possible to see the actual full wave from ground level. In essence it's like the entire level of the sea quickly rises in that local area. The force of water that high rushing in like that is tremendous. All that force is flowing in at once. It can rip apart buildings, toss cars, and people are pretty much rag dolls once they get into it.

My prayers go out to the people that are and will be effected.

There are reports the death toll will run into thousands as 200 - 300 bodies have been found washed up on the shore and a boat carrying 100 people and a passenger train are also missing. Let's hope the international community can help as much as they can as Japan is always one of the most generous when it comes to helping other nations in times of crisis. :(

No Canadian casualties reported in Japan

Phew! Thanks Toronto Sun. That's what we were all really worried about

Apparently, no Azerbaijanis were hurt either.

Any news on that wave?
That report needed to be in the last paragraph of the main Earthquake/Tsunami title or as ONE of the bullet points under the title in the main article, making it an article of its own implies that once Canadians read that there are no missing Canadians they won't care about the main event. Poor and insensitive journalism.

If any people could get through this type of ravage it's the Japanese people.

waiting . . . . :wave2: Fortunately, it's low tide time at the moment

. . .better waiting than wading :D

All the best man. Better find some pussy fast before it's washed away to sea.

Holy shit, the nuclear power plant *Fukushima* is getting cooled by batteries only...( because of no electricity for the cooling - pumps ) , hopefully they´ll get back the electricity for them ....or .....:facepalm::mad:

I've see all the things in japan cars, boat etc . are totally wipeout

Here Zombie, Zombie, Zombie...
I was about to say, thankfully it didn't hit land, then here comes the wave. This sucks. They're so much more prepared than California for an earthquake, it's not even funny. But huge waves are another matter. Hard to stop a 30 foot tall wall of water.

My hopes and praises goes out to the people of Japan. I know they'll get through this disaster and come back stronger than people.

Re: Tsunami warnings issued for at least 20 countries after quake in Japan

Just been watching this on the news and it is really bad. At 8.9 its the 6th highest earthquake in the world ever.

When I first saw the huge Tsunami waves I thought it was Godzilla:bowdown:

And it wasn't even on land(like Haiti) ,but miles out at sea.

Unfortunately it seems to have happened during the afternoon when people are active at sea(heard there is a boat of 100 or more missing), on highways/bridges & it may bring the casualties up a bit.

All things considered JApan is almost obssessively prepared for earthquakes/tsunamis. Really hope the casualties are low.

Man, this feels surreal. It hasn't even hit me yet how bad things are. I think this is one of the ones that they have been waiting on. The one that would wreck untold havoc on that country. They have been biding their time since the Kobe earthquake in 95 for something like this. Even though they were well prepared the devastation is still overwhelming.

Doesn't appear to be over either. They got hit with another earthquake less than 23 hours after the Tsunami.

The confirmed death toll has risen significantly over the last few hours. When I last checked it was 30-40, now it's in the hundred and could be thousands. I was hoping it would be more minimal too. I believe the '96 earthquake in Kobe killed around 6,000. There was also a quake in 1923 that killed about 150,000. Japan is a hot epicenter for large quakes, but they were prepared as they could be though so if there's one consolation it's that the casualties are far less due to their quake proof infrastructures and responsive evacuation procedures.
