Manhattan Judge James Gibbons quits after massive porn cache is found on work compute

A cleavage-crazed criminal court judge - who fathered a son with a young Legal Aid lawyer - quit after officials found a massive porn stash on his work computer, sources said Thursday.

Disgraced Manhattan jurist James Gibbons, a whip-smart ex-prosecutor who once convicted rapists and killers, fired off a terse resignation letter last week after the nasty cache was uncovered.

"There was a lot of porn on his computer - all young women," an investigator told the Daily News. "Lots of crotch and cleavage shots."

The Manhattan district attorney's office is scouring the vile files to determine if criminal charges are warranted - and are checking whether any of the women are underage.

Gibbons, 47, already had raised eyebrows with his ethics-skirting romance with Legal Aid lawyer Jeanne Emhoff, 31, who he fathered a son with weeks ago.

Emhoff's Facebook page, which was pulled down Thursday, featured a photo of a man with a boy on his shoulder.

The porn revelation staggered the baby's grandparents.

"This is going to break her heart," Emhoff's stepdad said of his wife. "She thinks the world of Jim. ... This will destroy my wife."

Gibbons - who was not arrested - was caught when a computer-monitoring system in the courthouse red-flagged his courthouse terminal, a law enforcement source said.

He was on paternity leave when the images were discovered and the computer seized.

During the 14 years he worked in the Manhattan district attorney's office, Gibbons was well-known for his efficient handling of street crimes.

He also enjoyed a good reputation on the bench after his December 2001 appointment by departing Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

"He was a very careful judge on the law," lawyer Adam Freedman said. "If he was using his state-issued computer for illegal activities, it would be uncharacteristic, considering how careful he is on the law."

Despite the possible conflicts of interest between Gibbons and Emhoff, a source close to the case said, their affair was unrelated to the investigation.

"There is absolutely no link between the judge's relationship with Jeanne Emhoff and any alleged criminal activity," the source said. "One has nothing to do with the other."

It was unclear when the porn was found on the disgraced judge's computer, but sources said its discovery was just routine.

"In government agencies, and in many private sector firms, employers are able to monitor employee computer usage," a source said.

Gibbons quit his position with a simple three-paragraph letter that offered no clues to his sudden nightmare.

"It has been a privilege to serve as a judge of the Criminal Court of the City of New York," he wrote. "Please accept this letter as a statement of my resignation of that office effective today."

Maybe not smart at all at work, but seems like this guy was a good judge. Why not just warn him not to have it in his work PC anymore. None of it was underage according to other reports. Anyway what is wrong with our country. It isn't illegal, just a bit boneheaded. I bet if it were a collection of 500 horror movies with decapitations it would be like....meh, its fake.

Having legal porn on your computer is no big deal. I'm sure most men who have computers have something explicit on them. Having the shit on a work computer is just dumb...he should have been fired for being dumb.

But there is allot of bluster and innuendo in this story that doesn't amount to much.

They're acting like the guy should be disgraced for having a baby with a 31 yr. old chick and pictures of young chicks on his computer. Assuming these chicks are of age...most chicks who do this shit are "young".

Unless there is a specific rule against porn at work this man should have been warned privately. Now his career has been ruined and he is said to be excellent at his job.

Well Johan...he did actually do something wrong. As free (relatively speaking) as the US is it is still not your right to use some company's or g'ment's equipment for your own personal use. It is tolerated in limited situations but not necessarily with gross violations like downloading and storing porn.

That's good for starters. Yet it's ok for Catholic Priests to molest children and help plant terrorist bombs :dunno: However he should have been smart enough to know not to use a work PC to watch/store porn, he is a top judge after all and with that position comes great responsibility.

Ok. But wasn't it possible to deall this stuff as an intern matter ? Wasn't it possible to sanction him without firing him ? I mean, when the guy who does good job, you can show some mercy if he does something wrong that not harm the company (or any institution employing the guy).

Also, was it necessary to make it public so that the guy's carreer wouldn't have been ruined.

I mean, the guy uses his office computer to download porn. It's not big deal. It's not like he was corrupted or something like that !

I agree with all this. I think it was way overblown and there is allot of hyperbole in this story.

But there are a couple of things that make this a little different. A judge isn't really subject to reprimand for misconduct that doesn't relate to the discharging of his job on the bench.

Then there is the question of so called violation of some (public) trust as a judge for abusing public property which could make it difficult for him practically to maintain his position on the bench.:2 cents:

All in all, the story is overblown IMO.

Another part of this is that viruses are almost inseperable from Pr0nZ, meaning that if he DLs a trojan to the comp, all those private judicial and county records would become available.... The revenue from blackmail opportunities alone would be quite astounding...
