The rep thing perplexes me too. I read the FO explanation on one of the Support pages once, but it didn't explain very much, at least not about how the points stack up. The explanation doesn't go beyond saying it's a game, and you can give, get, take away or lose rep points.

But I guess one thing to consider is whether you've used any of your rep points? I think you can use them to buy things, or maybe that's something else.

Regardless, I think the accumulation of points might have something to do with how much you give, not just how much you get. I could be wrong about that too, I guess. But it seems like I've seen my rep points increase when I give someone rep.

And of course, you're limited in how much rep you can give someone. I tried giving you rep a second time once, Mandy, and it told me I had to "spread it around a little" before giving to you again. So maybe you have a core group of fans who want to give you more rep but can't, whereas Ban-1 contributes to a lot of different threads and gets rep from a wider variety of people?

Basically I don't know and should shut up.

Eh, yes and no. If you don't give rep and only receive, you can "top out". The rep power of the people you receive rep from also matters.

You can only rep x number of times in a day, and you have to give rep x number of times to others before giving it to a person a second time. And time doesn't matter on this at all.

You can not use rep points to buy things though. That is Freeones points and they are completely different.

I can tell you why, Mandy. I had built up a lot of rep prior to the new rep system, so when everyone's was adjusted down (as several people had hit the max limit), I still had a fairly high number. If you look under 'Settings,' there's a list of rep received and given, and according to mine, I have received 139957220 rep points, but only have 27995 rep power, what shows up in the side bar of my posts.

I believe it used to be that when rep was given, you received a percentage of the amount of rep the person giving has, based on the number of posts they had made. So I got big chunks of rep really quick. Now, I think it's limited so that no matter what, while there still is some scaling, the max is like 100 points. Also, it used to be you could give rep as often as you wanted, so the same person could rep you several times in a short period. Now, you have to dole out rep to a certain number of other people before you can rep the same person again, and there is a maximum number of times in a day.

It's actually written down around here somewhere, and if I can find the official explanation, I'll post it or link to it.

Well, I found some official explanations, but I know there's more to it. (like why it was changed)

What is reputation?

Reputation is a way of rating users depending on the quality of their posts.

Reputation may be positive, negative, or neutral. Neutral reputation is only given when the person giving reputation does not meet the criteria set by the administrator to affect someone else's reputation.

How do I give reputation?

To give reputation, click on the reputation icon in the relevant post. This will reveal a form to complete with the reputation type and the reason for giving the reputation. You may not give reputation for the same post twice.

How do I know what reputation I have received?

You can view the reputation that you have received in your User CP (User Control Panel) where it is displayed at the bottom of the User CP page. Here you will see the latest reputation that you have received and whether this is positive, negative or neutral. Your total reputation will be shown as series of reputation indicators in your posts and profile. The more positive your reputation, the more positive icons will be shown. The more negative your reputation the more negative icons will be shown.

How much reputation is given? What is reputation power?

The amount of reputation that each user will give (or take away if negative) is shown in the user's posts as 'Reputation Power'. The value of reputation will increase over time as you get more reputation.

The original purpose of the system was to allow members to reward other members for posting good links, insightful comments or just a "pat on the back." However, the system has become, for many, a simple way to say "hello" or hand out reputation in a random manner (a "rep bump"). As such, there may be members that:

1.) Take reputation very seriously and gives/takes only when deemed necessary/worthy
2.) Gives reputation just to be friendly or hope to get reputation back (collectors)
3.) Could care less about the system
4.) All or some of the above

To that end, the reputation system does not signify the importance, credibility or respect level of a member.

Why did someone give me negative reputation?

If you received negative reputation, there may very well be a solid reason. There also may not be a reason that you can perceive. This is a part of life on this message board. Don't let negative reputation affect your participation, unless of course you realize that the negative reputation was for a legitimate reason and you need to stop your behavior (such as rule violations).

What constitutes ***** of the reputation sytem?

If someone simply disagrees with you or wants to point out that your post is breaking the rules, this does not constitute as ***** of Reputation. However, if someone is using it to threaten or harass you, please alert a moderator.

What if I don't want anyone to see my reputation?

You can disable the display of your reputation by going to your User CP and selecting Edit Options. On this page you will find a check box labelled 'Show Your Reputation Level'. Un-checking this box will remove the display of your reputation and replace it with the Reputation Disabled icon. You can still give and receive reputation while your reputation display is disabled.

Does reputation do anything else?

Yes! You can earn FreeOnes Credits when you earn positive reputation! Don't worry, if you get negative reputation, the system will not touch your current FreeOnes Credits!

First 50 reputation = 100 FreeOnes credits
Every 50 reputation until 250 = 100 FreeOnes credits
250 reputation = 250 FreeOnes credits (one time only)
Every 250 reputation after the initial 250 = 200 FreeOnes credits**

**Please note there is a limit on how many FreeOnes credits you can earn from reputation. Once you reach this limit, you will not receive anymore credits via reputation

Here's the Premium Link Upgrade , and the Premium Link Upgrade , though they both seem to say pretty much the same thing as the above. There used to be a really good explanation around here (I remember reading it when they changed the systems, and it explained about all the changes from the old to the new), but I can't find it.

This helps some:

It now takes 5000 reputation to get 1 point of reputation altering power. Out of our regulars 30 of them were at the cap so the number was dramatically adjusted down so that people won't be reaching the cap THAT easily. This way we don't have to even think about resetting the whole thing for years to come.

Those of you who are at 429000 (and some numbers above that) are at the reputation cap. 2 billion is the limit on a 32bit system, which our old one was. We've upgraded to 64bit and Raymond did increase the database cap, but I don't think it's working. Unfortunately, outside of resetting rep, I don't think there's anything that can be done to fix it.

- Reputation has been changed a bit:

* Max rep that anyone can give to someone else at one time, even if they have a billion rep, is set to 100.

* Because of the above, daily amount of clicks have been increased and the spread reduced.

* Comments are required for both positive and negative rep. So you can't just rep someone without leaving a comment.

* The boxes in your user cp showing rep given and rep received have switched so that received is now on top and given is on the bottom.!

And there's this thread " Premium Link Upgrade " that helps explain the old system, the new, and the differences.

I also think that the old system showed your 'rep power' and 'rep received' as the same thing, but now they've split it into 2 different things, where the rep power (1/5000 of rep received) is what is shown, not total points received. Or the old way was under the 1/1000 system.
