I have my own theory as to why Dirk left. I remember him mentioning about a month ago that the inconsistencies concerning the banning of certain people was a very evident. This was concerning my banning not from a few weeks ago, but the ban I got about a month or so ago. My most recent ban was just prior to him leaving.

It's not about being right or wrong, it's about getting along with others, which is something we all should be able to do, no?

Some individuals here - past and present - seriously struggle with getting messages across without offending others. Most often, on any board, it's not so much about what you communicate, but how you communicate. You can push an opinion all day that no one agrees with and not offend people. Really, you can. You can say something a million times and not upset others. But when you try to drive something down their throats - they'll react. Negatively. And this is how the problem usually starts. People react to and battle over behavior - not opinion. We've seen this happen here time and time and time again. Many of us are 'guilty' of it; some more than others.

Dirk had been here for a long while. Easily, one of the most popular members of the board since I've been here. He's a smart, accomplished, funny and intelligent person. Many people liked him, many considered him a friend. He's a good guy, who has strong opinions of his own but loses patience sometimes. We all do / have.

People are as "fake" in real life as they are in online. In fact, often times people are less themselves in the flesh. People hide their true selves to try an ingratiate themselves to others. They stuff down everything offensive in order to put forward a false face that is more pleasing, and less likely to evoke ire. Ultimately the anonymity of the Internet can in many ways make the need for a personae that many people feel in "real life" redundant, thus they are their "truest" selves online. They speak their minds more readily and more open because they are less concerned about the consequences because ultimately the consequences are fewer and further away.

You are more likely to know someone's thoughts, who they really are, when they feel free to speak their minds and there are fewer places where they are freer.

Keep in mind that Ariel Castro had friends and a girlfriend. If you think you know someone better just because you've looked them in the eye you sorely underestimate how readily people will lie to your face.

I wonder if there is some sort of psychological study being done on the mindset of people who have virtual lives on forums like this. People playing pretend hidden behind made up names thinking that they actually KNOW the other people who are also playing pretend and using made up names. There must be some sort of think tank some place at a university more than likely.

Dirk might be a great guy. He also might have a hobby collecting taxidermy dogs. All I know is that when I posted a thread about religion his first comment to me EVER was angry and aggressive. That doesn't sound like a warm and wonderful person to me.

Here's a hint to you Christians: if you believe in an invisible man and all that insanity that goes with it, you need to learn to have a thicker skin when someone questions it or points out how ridiculous most of it is when real thought enters into it.

If Dirk is gone then hopefully it's for something better and more rewarding.

It wasn't JUST the politics section that made him go away (by the way, his account is active, he just changed his user title), it's all the bullshit that pisses most people off around here: trolls run rampant while everyone feeds them. He can't fathom how people like Will and Mariah, people who are so obtuse and closed-minded that they can neither see nor accept any point of view other than their own, can exist, and they tired him. He's just taking a break, just as most of us have done here and there, and he says he'll most likely be back at some point or another.
