Is Science Fiction Dead?

I have to watch firefly as well never seen it. Watched just about everything else, though dunno why folks are on about fantasy related **** like buffy etc. Oh yea must get into fringe as well. Seen serenity and it was good.

PS> Where is the rep love for this bitchin' thread.

Oh yea my list of franchises.

1. Star trek
2. Star wars
3. Battlestar galactica reboot
4. Babylon 5 fook they should give straczynski some benjamins and do a reboot cause this was one seriously under rated kick ass show.
5. As of late I been getting into Doctor Who. Kinda childish but the backstory is fucking awesome with gallifrey and the time war etc.

All of the above to be honest can't be listed they all inhabit the same level of awesomeness.

Such a shame Serenity flopped so badly in terms of bums on seats .... had it not I have no doubt they would have resurrected the TV show.

Ah, well ... one more disappointment to add to the likes of the cancellation of Carnivale ....

I'm not surprised it had a problem with bums on seats - at my local cinema, it was on for 1 week - I never got a chance to see it. Got the DVD as soon as it was released, though.
Firefly has to be the best SF series ever made. The whole new frontier as a western background was quite brilliant.

I swear, I have no idea what everyone's problem with Enterprise was. I didn't have the chance to watch it when it was a show, but I went beginning to end on Netflix. I really liked it. Obviously, the Star Trek franchise is always going to water down what they do, but I enjoyed the show. I especially liked the juxtaposition between the very beginning, with everyone being eager and optimistic; and when they finally got back to Earth, burned out and pissed. The part where Archer is out with the hot Captain of the "Columbia", "Forget diplomacy, don't worry about first contact, screw giving aid. Pack as many weapons as you can carry, then pack a few more." (ad libbing, of course) Anyway, I enjoyed it and I'm sorry they cancelled it. One more good Sci-Fi show, gone. And all we're left with is this new movie crap, which isn't going to work out anyway, and if it does we still have to wait for years for the next one. Bullshit, with a side of bullshit, heavy on the bullshit.

I have to say that I enjoyed Enterprise as well.

No SF is not dead. I don't think that there are many good SF films - there have been a lot of disappointing translations from the written word to the silver screen, but there have been a few good ones too. The only thing is that it has been a while since the last really good SF movie. I, Robot should have been great, but it was so loosely tied to the original short stories that I was extremely disappointed.

There are a number of struggling SF magazines - I subscribe to Analog Science Fiction and Fact ( Premium Link Upgrade ), which often has some great stories, ranging in length from a single page to serialised novellas over 3 or even 4 issue as well as factual science based articles. I have just discovered that you can get the magazine on Kindle as well, so I may just do that when my current subscription runs out.
Other good magazines include Asimov's SF ( Premium Link Upgrade ) and the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction ( Premium Link Upgrade )

I was sort of surprised SGU got cancelled so quickly. I never watched it, but the previews made it look really good, plus having Robert Carlyle seemed like a big score for them. I guess doing the "we can't get back to Earth" premise would be a little tiring after Voyager did it for seven years...

I was expecting it to be great... and there were SO many opportunities for them to get it right. But the characters were incredibly lame and the writing was weak. You know how in Atlantis they had characters that sort of mimicked the (likeable/interesting) characters in SG-1? Well, in Universe, the Captain was sort of a weak dolt, his second in command was a pansy, the ***'s love interest was a Kim K@rdashian like, half-wit whiner (then they turned her into a genius once she got infected by an *****), the Daniel Jackson/Rodney McKay genius character was written as a fat nerdy *** who seemed to be on the verge of wearing a diaper at any moment. And there was the angry Asian lesbian, who was a foil to the military people on the ship. Plus, they never really developed a bad guy element. It was just weak and directionless, IMO. I eventually got to the point that I was hoping for some evil ***** to **** them all. I always had a positive feeling at the end of SG-1. At the end of Universe, I wanted to see the "good guys" die miserable deaths.

Carlyle portrayed the only interesting character on the show (for me): Dr. Rush. I take that back. There was also a Teal'c like character. I called him Sgt. Crazy Man, but his name was Sgt. Ronald Greer. Actually, he was nothing like Teal'c. But just like with Teal'c and Ronon, the franchise always had an ethnic character who was the tough guy. Along with Dr. Rush, he was one of the few truly complex characters on the show - he had mucho emotional issues. And for eye candy, they had a striking blonde named Tamara Johansen or "T.J.", played by Premium Link Upgrade . I liked her character... plus she was a complete hottie (even when they tried to tone her down).

I lurked on a sci-fi message board and the divide was among long time SG-1 fans and fans of the Universe show. The SG-1's were the traditionalists, I guess. The Universe fans were much smaller in number, and they wanted people to give the show a chance. I hated the show when it was on. But in light of the complete crap that's on now, I'd probably watch it again if it came back.

You owe it to yourselves to see it.

One word of warning whenever you get around to watching: You just may wind up as pissed, bitter and disillusioned as I am that it was cancelled.

It's not like I haven't had ample opportunity to do so, I own the show on DVD. Just laziness on my part I guess.

Anyway, Babylon 5 FTW!

BTW, I don't think I've seen it mentioned here yet, but did anyone here follow Caprica? What did you think of it, if you saw it? It seemed like another show with a great premise. But they turned it into a sad imitation of The Matrix, with too heavy a focus on the (annoying) teenage girls on the show.

Writer 1: "I can't think of ANYTHING for this week's episode."
Writer 2: "Just dress Chloe/M!ley Cyrus look-alike up in a rubber suit and focus the camera on her ass. Who needs a good script?"

Unlike Stargate Universe, it seemed like they were on the verge of turning that show around. But by then, the writing was on the wall. Too bad really.

I can't believe people are ripping on Buffy/Angel. It took me three years to start watching Buffy when it was on, because it sounded stupid as hell. I was wrong. Joss Whedon didn't just have a small role in those show, those were his main projects before he went on to do Firefly, and the writing is first class.

I should watch Firefly this week. I really can't imagine it's as awesome as Buffy/Angel (and those shows included numerous Science Fiction elements, so they weren't just "fantasy crap", and can fit into the context of this thread).

BTW, I don't think I've seen it mentioned here yet, but did anyone here follow Caprica?

I can't do it. After suffering through the entirety of Battlestar Galactica, especially the incredibly horrid 2 final seasons, and the especially ridiculous finale, I simply cannot bring myself to invest any more time to this suckfest of a franchise.

Caprica was pure dirt, An attempt to chase the teenage girl demographic and a waste of potential. Should have went with the original cyclon war the amount of room in that. Amount of stuff they could play with like when the war drew to a close we could have seen the deal they made with the final five for resurrection and organic technology.

A young Adama as a pilot, a **** load of space battles. Original cyclon hybrid types etc. the whole ghost in the machine mixed with spiritual crap in caprica leading to matrix style **** been done to death. the japs do it best.

Spirituality was a weakness to the reboot, damn fundies. I mean I liked head six and head baltar but they didn't really need to open that can of worms and if they had to they should have looked to the original by including a race that where good and I dunno diametrically opposed to evil(evil is well subjective in a universal sense but I guess we could all agree that genocide is evil, no it is not just evil but a waste considering how much each culture can contribute to humanity.)

However I do agree that chicks are definitely the new cool. Geeks always roll them in wow etc(usually good at ******* you too lol) and a lot of books are now shifting towards female protagonists. It's in the Zeitgeist now.

From the advertisments it looked like Carlyle's character was the antagonist, and I never watched it but it actually looked really interesting because of that. It wasn't like Voyager where everyone got along and trusted each other: SGU looked like it had a group of people who were only working with each other out of necessity and had crew members who were very angry with each other and wanted to do things differently, etc. Most of the adverts for the first episode showed Carlyle yelling at everyone and it actually wanted to make me watch. Kind of glad I didn't if it wasn't really like that.

It sort of sounds like it is the franchise's Enterprise. Trekkies are all split on whether that show was good or not, too. I loved the show, but even I'll admit that the first and (especially) the second seasons were horrid. But it turned around in the third and the fourth season was excellent. A lot of these shows just need time to hit their groove. Even TNG needed time to become good.

You owe it to yourselves to see it.

One word of warning whenever you get around to watching: You just may wind up as pissed, bitter and disillusioned as I am that it was cancelled.

I've been meaning to watch Firefly on Netflix for the past couple weeks, but that's due to my unrequited love of Christina Hendricks more than it being a good show.

Christina Hendricks plays a good role on two episodes (and it would have been recurring if ....what?....the show hadn't been cancelled). And she was, of course, hot as hell in both of them.

I can't do it. After suffering through the entirety of Battlestar Galactica, especially the incredibly horrid 2 final seasons, and the especially ridiculous finale, I simply cannot bring myself to invest any more time to this suckfest of a franchise.

I finally started watching BSG late in the series based on a friend of mine recommending it. I didn't **** it, but it didn't **** me if I missed an episode either. I have to admit though, I did watch it more as they began revealing the Final Five. And as the sounds being heard turned out to be a re-imagined version of All Along the Watchtower, I liked the hell out of that concept! That was a great plot device, IMO. They also had some damn amazing visuals during those episodes.

But yeah, I was confused (and disappointed) by the final episode. I didn't necessarily want closure (too many American shows feel like they have to give the audience that), but it just didn't make enough sense. It was like they were smoking too much pot when the writers dreamed that one up.

The whole "Girl Power" theme that's beginning to completely take over action movies and sci-fi just isn't my thing. I'm not saying that I just want girls in movies to be cute, helpless things that need rescuing or are just there for sexual tension. But the majority of new action movies that I've seen trailers for have 110 pound girls kicking 250 pound guys' asses with flying karate kicks, dodging bullets, etc. I know Hollywood is a place where the producers, writers and directors project their desires onto the audience, but could we just get back to good story telling and leave the femdom fantasies of the directors and writers aside for a second??? Seriously.

The exploration of spirituality in Caprica didn't bother me. That was a running theme through BSG too. Although I agree that they spent too much time on it, it was interesting (to me) to see what the origin of that was. And since that's been something that people have dealt with for thousands of years, I can see how people in the future would also struggle with it. But like you said, the waste of time with all the Matrix **** REALLY got on my nerves.

I think this could have been a really good show... if they'd had better writers and directors. Course, I guess that's true of most bad TV shows.

Yeah but a real sci fi writer would use technology especially of the transhumist variety to offset female limitations in regards to males.(c) But yea definitely get your point some the karate kicks look crap and it is so off kilter like they are taking the **** really. lmao.

my girl and i watched the new battlestar galatica. it was... ok i guess. it had its moments when it was good. somethings pissed me off but entertaining. im not one for that space stuff normally, i like regular fantasy stuff since ive been tabletop gaming.

starbuck though. man. wtf. shes annoying as hell sometimes.

i hear she was a guy in the original series, or at least the 1985. we'll prolly watch those and see how it came to be.

Original was a dude and a player. they just decided to inverse that I guess to make it more interesting. then they really lost the plot.

I can't claim to be a Trekkie. But I really enjoyed Enterprise - it seemed more "adult" than previous Star Trek series (plus, T'pol was pure fap). I've seen other people online, who followed Star Trek more than I have, who absolutely hated it though. I guess if you don't have any sort of expectations or deep knowledge of past series, you're more inclined to give it a chance.

Funny this topic came up because I watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture last night. I think I saw it when it first came out but I couldn't remember anything about it. I needed to go to bed, but I couldn't stop watching. I thought it was pretty good. Again, a good mix of decent story telling, decent themes and smart visuals (for the time). Also, Persis Khambatta (RIP) as Lt. Llia was pretty stunning. Sort of like a sexy version of Data.

Yup, in the original Starbuck was played by Dirk Benedict, who would go on to play "Faceman" Peck in the original A-Team.

Richard Hatch (Tom Zarek in the new BSG) was the original Captain Apollo.

Latest star trek reboot movie was very good.

I disagree. I thought it sucked ass. One of the successful key elements of Star Trek was a certain plausibility of the ship designs. WTF was Nero's ship all about? Where did he get it and all the weapons?

Since when does the Enterprise need water to run? What's the deal with a starship being built on the surface of Earth? What was the point of car theft thing when Kirk was a ***?

And in any case, Star Trek belongs on the TV. There's plenty of time to make movies after the series has had a successful run.
