Is Libya a victory for Obama?

For Obama (or anyone else) to consider Libya a victory would be a huge "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" blunder. All we've done is take a country with a long history of sponsoring terrorism and 1) force them into a civil war, 2) bomb their leadership out of existence, 3) hand them massive quantities of weapons, and 4) not put a single soldier on the ground to help clean up the mess we've made. Iraq may have been a mistake, but at least it was a mistake we had the good sense to try and fix. Libya is a mistake that we're going to naively walk away from, all while comforting ourselves with the arrogant notion that, "At least Americans didn't die."

W. tried to police the world. Obama just likes to sucker punch it.

There comes a time when one has to quit supporting despotic regimes and tyrants just because it's politically convenient for us for them to be in power. I think supporting people like that has caused more problems than letting all the people of a country decide their own fate, even if there might be risk in that.

If that can be obtained with only cutting support and not going to war or doing much active engagement with them ourselves, then all the better.

:goodpost: this is what's in store for Libya ...after the oil, the exits .

Fu Manchu!

We'd have to be in Libya in order to hit the exits.

C'mon busen...:sing: Alllll we-are-say-ing, is give thinking a tryyy:sing::facepalm:

The US lost the second Gulf War. End of story. Iraq is a failed state. US citizens can't even walk around the city without an armored convoy, they all stay trembling and blubbering like crybaby pussies inside the so called "Green Zone." There are regular suicide bombings which kill hundreds of people at a shot nearly every day somewhere in Iraq. That in itself is the definition of a failed state.

What it does show is that Arab countries can only be run by a strongman. We took Iraq's out and the country begins to dissolve. Now Libya has lost it's King Loony.
The idea of democracy existing in any Arab muslim country is a joke.

what the fuck you lookin at?
My question, what did he do (to US)?

Exactly! Who cares? Why did we waste tax payers money to "get" some guy who's not even fucking with the US?

Yeah...hard to get excited about eliminating someone who was practically minding their own business. Saddam or the gadfly.

Daffy needed to be brought to justice for his ardent support of terrorism in the '80s that murdered Americans including servicemen. He also needs to be brought to trial for his murder of the innocent on Pan Am 103, and UTA 771.

I suppose you should be thanking and praising Obama for this then.:dunno::2 cents:

kinda like Saddam in 2003?

or Marcos?
or Noreiga?

Conveniently removing governments when we feel like it (while ignoring far worse offenders) long after the said 'crimes'?

We should bring Netanyahu to justice too, right?

Yeah...pretty much right on. It's an untenable policy perspective because by some of these standards we are leaving put others that are equal by definition but too difficult to engage and thusly, we look like inconsistent hypocrites.

Well we have an opportunity now that the regime and his security apparatus have been removed Daffy can now be brought to justice.

Now is the time to make Daffy pay for his crimes against the American, French, and Libyan civilians.

Noriega had to go when he went loony in '89 and started threatening Americans and the Canal.

Marcos was booted out by his own people and Aquinos.

Why would we bring Netanyahu to justice? We're not some Communist anti Jew gov't.

"Everyone’s worried about stopping terrorism.
Well, there’s really an easy way: Stop participating in it."

That post just shows how depraved you are.

You sat there cheering on Mubarak as he gunned down pro democracy protesters in Egypt but you want us to believe that the victims are the biggest impediment to having elections?

Thanks for giving me a reminder of what religion can do to somebody's brain.

Democracy would probably take hold in those countries if the US stopped backing the dictators who rule them, rigging elections like it did n Iraq and Afghanistan and if it took their bases out of those countries. No real democracy can exist under a foreign occupation.

We got to stop trying to be the world police. When a republican gets ride of a dictator, the dems complain "we got to stop being the world police". But when the dem throws military force behind getting ride of a dictator, the GOP complains "we got to stop being the world Police".

You know what im sick and tired of both Dems and Repubs trying to be the world police. What comes after Gadhafi? Speaking to people who have spent half there lives in Libya, im told that the tribes dont like each other very much. So according to them, Libya is likely to go into civil war between the tribes.

So i wonder when civil war starts how much money and resources will the USA spend in order to turn Libya into something its not.

Please distinguish the 3G people from the religious. 3G people (god, guns and gays) aren't religious and wouldn't know the first thing about faith if it spilled all over them.:2 cents:

No real democracy can exist in a Arab muslim country.

Your only choices are:

Dictator
Mullah/Clerics
King

But that's true of most socially conservative states, they prefer the aristocracy over democracy.

Re: Is Libya a victory for Obama?

If Libya ends up becoming more democratic, good, I'm all for it, kudos to Obama for whatever role he played in ousting the colonel I guess (even if he did violate the terms of the agreement he made with the Arab League and the UN ), but we shouldn't expect good things to happen simply because Khadaffy is out. The big question is, who will replace Khadaffy and how do we know that said replacement isn't 10x the brute Khadaffy was?

What happens now, do we stand by and help the new government of Libya rebuild their nation? Can we afford to? Can we afford not to?

Where are the huge stockpiles of small and medium sized arms being hidden in Libya and how do we know that they're not going to end up in the wrong hands?

Who are the rebels for the most part, are they democratic and pro American?
(I seriously doubt it)

Does Obama actually want a democratic type of government to represent the people of Libya? If yes, then why did he go to the Arab League and the UN for approval, they're appointed positions of power not elected positions.
