Do you find that some people just don't get what you mean sometimes?

Even on the Freeones Board there seems to be a problem with folk not being able to grasp what you're saying or doing. It's a shame as there are definitely some bright users on the Board but sometimes I just get the feeling that there's a distinct lack of comprehension particularly where irony and sarcasm are concerned.

I haven't made that many posts and I often struggle with my (written and read) English, which is my mother tongue. But sometimes I write something with the best intentions and it's thrown back at me as though it were venom.

Is this a North American problem I'm encountering - the lack of sarcasm and irony? Sometimes when I'm reading through a thread I just feel that there are some people on the Board who haven't read a book or know what a passport is for...

Am I a terrible snob? Is this a problem encountered by other users? Do you find you hit a cultural brick wall again and again? Is it just me?

Fuck's sake. I feel like going into London tonight, drinking heavily and spoiling for fights!

Maybe I've just had a bad day...

It can be very difficult to figure out what someone means sometimes. In real life sarcasm is usually your tone or body language. The words in the English language are usually the most useless way to define what someone actually means. As Americans we use the emphasize on the words to get our point across.

Online isn't the best place to debate in my opinion. I also suffer from understanding what people sometimes mean on the internet. I've suffered from the English language my whole life though. That's a totally different story that I can't share.

There is tons of people on this board that wouldn't recognize irony and sarcasm if if punched them in the face.

- For the record, it is not possible to actually be punched in the face by irony and/or sarcasm. Unless someone was named Irony and/or Sarcasm.

Not true at all. Words are the most powerful tool, if used properly, and sarcasm and the such can very definitely be displayed through the English language. I do it all the time in these forums. I love to write sarcastically.....you can really drive your point home effectively, or better yet, clearly show how much you can't stand some people in the forums without being a child and calling names.

The English language is paint, my friend, many many types and colors of paint, and the blank screen and cursor are the canvas. You just have to get creative.

There is the language barrier for me at times.

Humor, Irony and Sarcasm are not always obvious when it's not in your mother tongue, like it's the case for me. At times, i might look very lunatic regarding that - but that's the language barrier.

Like it was said by 24788, In real life sarcasm is usually your tone or body language... and for people like me, without those elements, the language itself makes humor, irony or sarcasm harder to grasp at times.

But who cares if i look stupid at times: i'm not perfectly mastering english language and i'm glad to learn a little more each day about it.

:2 cents:

Sidenote: The opposite is also true. It's very difficult to write humor, irony and sarcasm in english for people like me. Those elements are somewhat unique to each languages/cultures... so my french canadian humor, sarcasm and irony often fall flat in english :o

Sarcasm... that's what the 'winky' smiley's for ;)

(I'm not using it sarcastically there...)

Most people aren't too intelligent. That's not an insult it's just reality. They have been robbed of their critical thinking ability at an early age and are unaware that they don't have it.:yinyang:

Yeah I know what you mean, sometimes I just feel like saying "Get your feet off your head, and your pants to your ears,
and think about all the people of the world who have no feet.
They can not walk around on their little non-footed areas...
now can they? Hah! I don't think they can!"

I find myself making posts all the time that say, "I believe that was supposed to be sarcastic." Not sure why it doesn't come across that way when it appears obvious to me. But then again, who knows what I am not picking up in a post.

Some people can not write a grammatically correct sentence. As hard as it is to convey an emotion with words, how are the rest if us suppose to interpret something to be sarcastic when it's not written with the correct punctuation?
Oh, the irony.

I both truly appreciate and am a big fan of Irony, sarcasm and sardonic wrath.
They make up a big part of my core character and personality.
With that being said, let me firmly tell you that my boss(es) have never truly appreciated nor understood this from me.......and I have the write-up in my personnel file to prove this.:thefinger

my comrades and I have a sense of humor that consists of pretending that we really like things that we actually hate and think are stupid.

it's like Steven Colbert and republicans. It's hilarious when you are in on the joke and the people you are actually mocking don't get it. And it confuses everyone else too, because they don't know if you are being serious or not.

I don't really like to insult people, but I like to confuse them; that is funny to me. and in a way it is kind of doing them a favor because shaking things up, surprising people and making them question their original conceptions makes life more interesting.

Some people are burdons and some people are not towards others. In the scheme of things, some people say oh, some people try to tighten up to become pesamistic. Which doesn't say anything about their sarcasm when they are not so serious. It is a trap, they hold you down and feed up sarcasm until you want to tell them to shut the hell up. Then it could go on to be more of a constint argument about being right or wrong. And you have to sit there and listen to every little annoying thing they have to say. Which could be helpful or not so helpful in understanding a person. If someone wanted to, they can make you out to be who ever they want. Which is Ironic, don't ya think? Since this is a free country and I can say to you this means this when it means something else. Or I can say this means that when it doesn't mean anything. Or I can just be a nice guy who has done not so nice things to people and has the intentions on doing it again. I could, but do I show it, or is it not a consideration? Maybe I haven't been doing what people think I should do as a normal civilian. That shouldn't take away from the saracam. You can ask yourself all kinds of different things. Or you can shut the hell up like the good man asks you to do. Or like the slimey two bit shit for brains demands you to. Either way, you don't have munch of a choice. Rights? there are no right? Politics is like pussy too much of it is not good, and it's bad for you. It can mess with you. If someone of a higher education says you don't have the right to do these things and be considered for what we are considerated for because you are not like us. They have the right to do to you and say to you whatever they like. Theres nothing you can do about it, because you don't have rights. All you have is your own two hands and you have to work for everything you ever get. Talk about the structure of todays society? It is sarcasm, or is it a concieved society? nobody knows, I tell you one thing its not a insane asslyum, It couldn't be. People know too much of what they are talking about. Sure, I could be wrong, but If I was right. Wouldn't we have already of had a black president. Sure that has everything to do with the sarcasm epidemic sweaping the new wave of population. Or even the folks who have been around for years to come. Not only is there another way to settle an understanding. You can also use someone else to do it for you. How helpful is that?
