If You Had 10 Grand to Buy a Car (or Cars)

For that money, possibly a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

Probaly a Lincoln Mark 8 or the last generation Cadillac Eldorado.

The more I look at both the Firebird and the Allante in my OP the more my dick gets harder. I want that 'Lac so bad. Only makes me want to work harder.

I´d buy ( again ) an ol Volvo V 90 Station . Great engine, lots of space, comfort with no end, leather ... good mileage, lots of extra´s .

Well, as I have got no drivers license, I woul dget a very good mountain bike, and a very good street racing bike

An early to mid 90s Mitsubishi 3000GT would be nice and I've seen them priced well below the 10K price you've mentioned. Nice fixer-uppers and usually very low in mileage and very well maintained when offered for sale too.

^^you can buy a ferrari or rolls for 20k, but then how much more do you have to spend on maintenance and spares?

In the late 90's I found a Ferrari 328 GTS down in Charlotte for about $27K. Beautiful car! The problem was, it was due for 30K mile service and that was going to cost at least $15K.

For $10K, I wouldn't be trying to punch above my weight. You can get nice enough, basic transportation at that price. I'd go for that, unless you just have to have something flashy (and ragged out)... that you'll probably have to work on all the time.

Maybe I'm the only one on the board or something, but I never understood why people think you have to splurge so much to have a really sick car. I get a kick out of asshats that lease and at the end of three years have nothing to show for it. It just never made sense to me. What's the point? Car is your worst investment. Is it any wonder why billionaires Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffet (to name only TWO) drive a Honda and a Lincoln respectively? Sam Walton's son drive a friggin 1999 Chevy Silverado and he is worth close to 20 billion. You give me 10 stacks and I gaurantee I could find a car that would absolutely turn heads everyday. :dunno: Hell, six stacks can have you a brilliant car, if you look in the right places and have patience.

It's all about personal choice BS - try not to generalize. A smart person that chooses to shell out $$$ on a lease first of all should be able to afford that lease. At the end of the term, they normally surrender the car and get into a brand new one. That makes perfect sense when you can afford it - it's a lifestyle. The 'asshats' are the ones who can't afford it but do it anyway.

Bezos and Buffet obviously aren't into cars - otherwise they'd invest more in them. So you can't really use them as examples. Jay Leno is loaded too, and look at the fleet of vehicles he has. But again, he's one person.

Agreed - a car is not an investment - it's usually a necessity. But for some who are so inclined and can afford it a car may be a luxury.

Anyone who buys a used rental car is fucked in the head. If only you knew what I did to the rentals my dad got over the years, not to mention every other guy with a pair between their legs, you would think twice. Me and the boys once stole my dads brand new Grand Am rental when he went to sleep one Friday and we beat that thing so hard it's a wonder it didn't break down on us. The governer kicked in on 94 I maxed that bitch out at 105.

I love the fact that for an extra $25 bucks a day you can submit their car to such abuse that would make the Spanish Inquisition blush.

Seriously, my current car is a former rental. It had 28k miles on it when I bought it in 2005, and besides the time when the fuel pump took a shit last August, I've never had any problems with it. I'm now at 150k miles, and it still runs like new.

I understand totall. My dad leased a truck not long ago. He doesn't anymore. As far as Buffet, I recall him saying cars are a complete waste of money. I didn't have to hear it from him to know. Either way, I think my point is a person with classy taste can have an insanely dope car for around 10. Of course, then I get belittled on here like I'm some sort of bum. Whatever. I think people are insane. Maybe it's because of all the stuff I've been through with all my cars and just knowing how fragile a car really is. Hell, I've owned like eight cars (a lot of them shitters from high school and so forth) so I know what they entail.

Trust me, I beat the everliving crap out of several rentals my dad had over the years. My buddy and I took a brand new town and country mini van once when the fam went to sleep and we had that engine smokin'! :D I'm glad your rental has worked for you, it's just that I know what folks have done to some of those vehicles, so I decline. :hatsoff:

Exactly! What's a nice car to one person may not be such a nice car to someone else. Just like with everything else, everyone has different tastes. In addition to races, I used to go to loads of car shows and NOPI events. There would be cars that the owners would have sunk tens of thousands into, and they'd win Best in Show or some other prize. But you couldn't have paid me to drive some of them off the show grounds - I'm not into gaudy or overly flashy cars. My girl jokes that if the cops ever stopped me and ran a blood test, they'd find that my blood is 90% gasoline. I love cars and the car culture. But my taste in cars may be totally different from some other guy who is also a car nut.

Bezos and Buffet obviously aren't into cars - otherwise they'd invest more in them. So you can't really use them as examples. Jay Leno is loaded too, and look at the fleet of vehicles he has. But again, he's one person.

I don't know anything about Jeff Bezos, but Warren Buffett is about as low key as a billionaire could be. I think he sold his Lincoln a few years ago and bought a Cadillac DTS (a company I worked for made components for that model). Warren owns a private jet (and a company that leases private ets) and he spends more time in the backs of limos than he does behind the wheel of a car anyway. So he's not a car guy (or a racing guy) at all. His new partner in crime, Bill Gates, is something of a car guy. Gates owns/owned several Porsches (including the totally bad ass 959), a Corvette, as well as several other sports car. There was a rumor that he was trying to get a McLaren F1 into the States years ago, but it got hung up in Canadian customs. I don't know if that's true or not.

But anyway, like I said, not everybody is a car guy... not everybody knows how to work on cars. Some cars hold their value better than others. Some are bigger money pits than others. I tend to buy cars either because I like the styling or performance (a sports car) or because it has features that I need (a truck for pulling a car trailer or AWD for bad weather).

Sometime in the next year or so, I plan on buying some sort of AWD light utility vehicle. Right now, I have my eye set on a Subaru Baja GT. I'll get a used one and I figure it'll be a little more than 10 grand, but I guess that's my answer.

.

True. I'm sure If I had five million right now I would have at least a half a dozen cars right now. But most of the stuff that I'm into (or was into) has always been reasonable MSRP. Of course I wouldn't mind owning a Bugatti, but it doesn't matter if I never do. The two in my OP and a few others (Tahoe, Navigator, Viper, 'Vette, International, and some other older American muscle) and I am a happy camper.
