In my honest opinion, the ignore function is there for losers: people who can't stand up for themselves if they get involved in a discussion. If that's not the case, they just use the ignore function because they are intolerant towards the others.

I've a feeling that, for some reason, almost everyone who did not know how to use the feature before and are experimenting with it from this thread, will put dirk on ignore.

I think that basically sums it up. You don't have to use the ignore function, just ignore them by not responding and giving them something to react on.
I'm surprised you haven't changed it.

Also, I've been using the ignore feature for just a few complete dickwads. In general, it's great. It gives me the option to view their posts if I want to, or just to go past their post without reading their bullshit. So, only see the crap posts when you're in the mood to tolerate/respond to them. Pretty good system.
