5 True Stories That Prove You Shouldn't Piss Off The IT Guy

In a company full of people who don't understand computers, the IT guy is like a wizard. If you get a weird error message, you're not getting any work done until he makes it all better. In some offices, these guys wield more power than the owner of the company.

And if you want proof, just look at what happens when they get pissed off ...

Reminded me of the stories of the "Bastard Operator from Hell"

A classic Internet Read, everybody should know, amnd everybody who has worked in a company with IT knows one, I think. I sure do ;)

A company should never have just one monolithic group of IT guys working for them, or at least they should have a quick backup contingency (like companies should have for almost any problem) they can quickly implement if something goes wrong. Have different groups watching each other in positions like that at all times.

It should also be noted that the people in the article were found out. Doing something and getting away with it are two different things.

Absolutely. I suppose the better hackers are the guys who can keep up their habits while noone being the wiser, or, as in most cases in ISP and agency cases... they get hired BECAUSE they are the best at their sneaky ways. The ISP I worked for did set up its Anti-Hacking/Abuse branch like that, along with some hardcore former government characters to keep them in line.

Not to mention it is just generally a pretty stupid idea to have any very sensitive data or systems that can be directly connected to the Internet baring things that absolutely need to do so in order to function by necessity, especially if one is a company or agency that should know better and has dedicated electronic security. True in today's world and going forward that will be a harder thing to do on a practical level, but still, it's just asking for trouble.

And it WILL be answered. Not connecting to the internet is not an option anymore these days. So it's just a matter of time. Whether it's a kid who thinks it'll be fun or a malicious government, ex-employee or criminal who's hacking. Whether it's carelessness of a company handling employees and passwords, or someone who wrote a new algorithm to exploit a weakness in software. Whether it's full intended or just by accident. Whether it's... There are so many dots an at some point someone's going to connect them.
