House GOP leaders...vote no on 9/11 bill

House Republican leadership is advising its members to vote against a bipartisan bill that would, among other things, bolster medical support to Sept. 11 victims.

The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009, sponsored by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), would provide medical monitoring to those exposed to toxins at ground zero, bolster treatment at specialized centers for those afflicted by toxins on Sept. 11 and reopen a compensation fund to provide for the economic loss of victims.

And it’s all paid for by closing a tax loophole on foreign companies with U.S. subsidiaries, Democrats said.

How fucking pathetic are the GOP on this issue. To them Vets and 9/11 are political tools.

I could agree with the GOPers in this case ONLY IF they're objection to it was the "among other things" part where Demos were trying to boondoggle a bunch of other spending in with this. That would be unconscionable.

But as it stands, GOPers appear to be opposed to this simply because it streamlines access to compensation and doesn't make people go to court to get. Huh?????

It creates a "new entitlement"??? You fucking dummies...if they're entitled to compensation..who gives a fuck if it's "new"????

Much like how they were aganist the PTSD being extended for Vets.

I'd like to see new laws put into place that makes it so their jobs don't give them any health coverage and to be a member of congress they needed to first give up every bit of your wealth and all valuable possessions they have, and then they could make somewhere around minimum wage so their total household income doesn't exceed it. They would never be able to accept money from outside sources either. I wonder how differently they would looks on government programs for the needy then. It must be nice coming from a group of people that are almost always rich before they even get into office and then getting a job where they get the best subsidized care the government can give them. We’re governed by a bunch of people that are nothing like what most Americans are, don’t live in our type of situations, and know nothing about the real world.

Oh, I love those earmarks!

Why would the republicans be on the side of additional paperwork, process and bureaucracy?
My, the times, they are a changin'. :(

GOPers want to tie these people up in court cases but who would the "defendant" be in all these potential litigations?? The g'ment!!!

Wouldn't it be in their interest just like any other "deep pocket" defendant to settle out of court for determinable damages? As opposed to wasting more time and money trying cases where the overwhelming majority of time, the liability isn't in question.

Think mannnnn...think.

I really does amaze me, the 180 degree turn that the GOP has made since the days of Ronald Reagan. I bet he's putting his fist through some walls in the afterlife.

Reagan made me want to be a Republican, Bush (both of them) made me become a Democrat.

It's crap like this that make me think I'll be living in Canada in about 5 years. Tired of this bullshit with politics, though, I will admit I don't know enough if Canada has to go through this either

What is revealing is how many politicians voted for the big bank bailouts voted no on this -- individual troops or victims simply have no political capital, and hence wield no clout in the minds of politicians when it comes to voting.

I am right there with you brother.

The fact that any office holder would make you join the oppositional party is rather sad. In my opinion. Sadder is the fact that most people won't/don't understand why that's so sad.

It's not surprising that the supposed "chest thumping, flag wavin', pickup truck drivin', beer drinkin', America--love it or leave it" party would actually do something this dumb, selfish, and anti-american.

The Republicans hate you if you aren't male, white and have a white collar job making more than $250,000. They've always been that way and they always will be. [Will John Boehner ever sit down and play the banjo with Joe the Plumber?]

The political ad that will come out of their idiocy over this will be worth a 10pt bump in the polls for the Dems.

fuck em.
its not the governments responsibility to pay for this.
thats what insurance is for.
or start an internet donation site, they'll get their bills paid
hek, they already paid the next of kin of those who died how many hundreds of millions?
that wasnt right either.
add to that early retirement to cops and other money paid directly to people how much ya got? few billion?

did the fed gov pay the victims of oklahoma city?
how about the Who concert in cincinnati
and whats next? pay for every bad thing that happens from plane crashesto house fires to deck collapses to oops i stubbed my toe?

too much boo hoo mentality.
" oh those evil greedy republicans don't want to pay for the medical monitering of the victims of 9/11"
you wanna know whose medical bills the gov should pay for? sick chronically ill children.
but they dont.
don't people realize that every dollar that the GOV spends that somebody worked for that dollar?
if people care so much about the already hundreds of millions of dollars spent on them victims of 9/11 then start a damn charity and donate to it.

For these people 9/11 is merely something to exploit, not actually take seriously...

who's exploiting them?
the republicans that want to cut down the already immense spending on them or the democrats who use them as an excuse to increase tax revenues and spend spend spend the future away?

instead of litigation, victims could try to get money from the fund. Republicans are calling the extension “well beyond what is needed to take care of latent claims,” according to a policy statement from the GOP.

“creates a massive new entitlement program, exposes taxpayers to increased litigation and is ‘paid for’ with tax increases and potential job losses.”

and my favorite:
reopen a compensation fund to provide for the economic loss of victims.
you mean pay people for not working?
doesn't the usa have enough of them already?

like i say to everyone, donate to a fucking charity if you care so much, stop insisting that other people pay for what you think is right.

I want the GOV to pay for and support kids born with mental or severe physical handicaps.
take care of then financially for the rest of their lives.
they don't.
should i blame the dems or the repubs?
or maybe donate to the make a wish foundation and shut up.

I don't understand what you are getting at. I don't know about anyone else but, I go with a certain party because I believe in the people that are running it. While there were many things that Reagan stood for that I didn't agree with, I honestly believed he was good for the country, during that time. If nothing else, we were better off than with Carter (who he defeated) or Mondale (who he defeared for re-election). I voted for Bush Sr. because the other choice was Dukakis (I still shudder what a country with Mike Dukakis at the helm would have been like) and both as a citizen and as a soldier, at the time, I felt betrayed by my own President.

Li'l Bush came along and completely reversed most of the policies that Reagan stood for and, IMO, made the U.S. much weaker at a time that we so obviously need to be stronger. The Republican party went along with his bullshit. So they lost me as a supporter. It's not like I wanted this but I really don't feel like I was given any other choice.

If you go to work for the g'ment in an environment with health hazards. And the g'ment tells you that it's safe to work there time and time again without additional protection (presumably to cut costs).

Who should bear the cost of compensating the people who suffer from exposure to this hazard?

Well if you are a city employee than the city should pay for your health care through their insurance which they do have.
which i believe they do and have been doing all along.

but speaking frankly, i can say that for a lot of people sept 11th was the best thing that ever happened to them.
especially those who didn't lose a family member.
So many people involved, regardless of age have been given early retirement.
that means they will get paid for the rest of their lives for not working, and theyre healthy and happy.
thats like hitting the lottery.
Family members/spouses of victims have been given millions by the state, the fed, and from charities.
They are set for life.
And many are still suing for more$$$.

In this case were talking a few hundred people with health issues and some are probably fraudulent.
but in any case I'm sure that their medical bills and health care have been taken care of.

But instead of people saying " Wow, what a country, it really has helped these people so much" , they say when finally someone says " ok, I think that's enough" ....."oh those evil. heartless politicians ( who of course are republicans) ".

I see this as a political strategy for the dems based on them knowing what the kneejerk public response would be.
Try to pass another entitlement'9/11 spending bill knowing that most republicans will vote against it, then turning around and saying " oh , see how heartless they are?"

Somehow I think for a lot of people having a dear loved one that's dead because of that whom they will never see again in this life or having an adverse health condition they will have to live with until they die having that money is poor consolation indeed.

Maybe the GOP will give them a bottle of Jack and a .45 so they can stop being a burden to society.
