I could agree with the GOPers in this case ONLY IF they're objection to it was the "among other things" part where Demos were trying to boondoggle a bunch of other spending in with this. That would be unconscionable.
But as it stands, GOPers appear to be opposed to this simply because it streamlines access to compensation and doesn't make people go to court to get. Huh?????
It creates a "new entitlement"??? You fucking dummies...if they're entitled to compensation..who gives a fuck if it's "new"????
Much like how they were aganist the PTSD being extended for Vets.
I'd like to see new laws put into place that makes it so their jobs don't give them any health coverage and to be a member of congress they needed to first give up every bit of your wealth and all valuable possessions they have, and then they could make somewhere around minimum wage so their total household income doesn't exceed it. They would never be able to accept money from outside sources either. I wonder how differently they would looks on government programs for the needy then. It must be nice coming from a group of people that are almost always rich before they even get into office and then getting a job where they get the best subsidized care the government can give them. We’re governed by a bunch of people that are nothing like what most Americans are, don’t live in our type of situations, and know nothing about the real world.

Wouldn't it be in their interest just like any other "deep pocket" defendant to settle out of court for determinable damages? As opposed to wasting more time and money trying cases where the overwhelming majority of time, the liability isn't in question.

instead of litigation, victims could try to get money from the fund. Republicans are calling the extension “well beyond what is needed to take care of latent claims,” according to a policy statement from the GOP.

I don't understand what you are getting at. I don't know about anyone else but, I go with a certain party because I believe in the people that are running it. While there were many things that Reagan stood for that I didn't agree with, I honestly believed he was good for the country, during that time. If nothing else, we were better off than with Carter (who he defeated) or Mondale (who he defeared for re-election). I voted for Bush Sr. because the other choice was Dukakis (I still shudder what a country with Mike Dukakis at the helm would have been like) and both as a citizen and as a soldier, at the time, I felt betrayed by my own President.
Li'l Bush came along and completely reversed most of the policies that Reagan stood for and, IMO, made the U.S. much weaker at a time that we so obviously need to be stronger. The Republican party went along with his bullshit. So they lost me as a supporter. It's not like I wanted this but I really don't feel like I was given any other choice.
If you go to work for the g'ment in an environment with health hazards. And the g'ment tells you that it's safe to work there time and time again without additional protection (presumably to cut costs).
Who should bear the cost of compensating the people who suffer from exposure to this hazard?

Well if you are a city employee than the city should pay for your health care through their insurance which they do have.
which i believe they do and have been doing all along.
but speaking frankly, i can say that for a lot of people sept 11th was the best thing that ever happened to them.
especially those who didn't lose a family member.
So many people involved, regardless of age have been given early retirement.
that means they will get paid for the rest of their lives for not working, and theyre healthy and happy.
thats like hitting the lottery.
Family members/spouses of victims have been given millions by the state, the fed, and from charities.
They are set for life.
And many are still suing for more$$$.
In this case were talking a few hundred people with health issues and some are probably fraudulent.
but in any case I'm sure that their medical bills and health care have been taken care of.
But instead of people saying " Wow, what a country, it really has helped these people so much" , they say when finally someone says " ok, I think that's enough" ....."oh those evil. heartless politicians ( who of course are republicans) ".
I see this as a political strategy for the dems based on them knowing what the kneejerk public response would be.
Try to pass another entitlement'9/11 spending bill knowing that most republicans will vote against it, then turning around and saying " oh , see how heartless they are?"
Somehow I think for a lot of people having a dear loved one that's dead because of that whom they will never see again in this life or having an adverse health condition they will have to live with until they die having that money is poor consolation indeed.
Maybe the GOP will give them a bottle of Jack and a .45 so they can stop being a burden to society.
