I did not say you deserved to have your phone stolen cause you had it out at a convention. What I said was that, by having it out at a convention where you were on your feet talking to and taking photos with fans, you did not do yourself any favours when it came to keeping it protected. Let me put it this way: I assume you have travelled around the world, so you know that people always stress that you need to be safe with your belongings if you're walking around, to the point that they make it sound like wherever you are going is the least safe place in the world. What I said was essentially the same thing. If the phone meant a lot I think having it out and about at a convention wasn't the best idea, even if you needed it for work. If its needed for work, why not keep it hidden and use (god I sound old fashioned here) a camera for taking photos? A digital camera is far more replaceable than a custom phone with all your contacts and personal info on it. If you want to take the phone with you to a convention and use it, it's your call, but it's my opinion that it's not the safest thing you could have done with it if it was important, and on the off-chance you experienced that first hand.

To be fair, if her husband was there actually holding and handling the thing, I'd have thought that was sufficient security--no matter how much attention she was paying to this fan or that booth, there would still have been another pair of hands and eyes keeping tabs on the phone. Then again I don't know the guy, maybe he's the clumsy type, but it still seems like she was covered in regards to security there.

I don't think it has anything to do with being clumsy, just taking extra precaution like I originally said. I assumed that she meant in her reply that her husband had the phone with him basically all the time, but it just takes putting it down on the table for two seconds and getting distracted for someone to steal it.

well humans are forgetful beings, sometimes you know all the safety measures but they mostly slip your mind, and in an instant, shitty accidents happen...well at least this situation wasn't a life/death one.

Anyways, talking about past won't solve that. You only learn from the past but you can't change it. Btw when did someone last said there was a time-machine?

cheers

He hid it behind the table at the booth. We've talked about it and we're both sure that the thief was watching him when he hid it, and when we both weren't looking for a few seconds he reached across the table and stole it.

Have you checked with the venue for CCTV? I imagine that this wasn't a walk-in-off-the-streets affair, if you can see what your thief looked like you might be able to track down who he is a bit quicker.

depending on your apps, a bunch of companies might have already had access to your contacts, photos, calendar, location and everything else.

no one reads those permissions. spooky.

I question her decision to bring her phone with her to a convention. It seems to me like that would be the perfect place for someone to steal it, and from a fan standpoint, nothing makes you seem less appealing than if you're sitting at your booth with your face in your phone. Hopefully she finds it, but I think she could have left it somewhere safer. Because, seriously: if you have a custom iPhone near anyone named Alejandro, it's going to get stolen one way or another.

I imagine it doesn't help that the things OCSMs wear at conventions almost never have pockets. (Or cover that much of their body at all) Hmmm, now if somebody could just come up with some sexy smart phone holder. Maybe a belt that angles around their waste and holds it in a holster type deal. It might become big when all those sexy ladies start wearing it.

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where lowlives didn't take what wasn't theirs though, regardless of what it is and where it was left? It is one reason why I haven't bought a smartphone yet, no one would want a 4-5 yr old Nokia, besides me.

There's actually stuff out there like this, but for runners. I'm sure something like that could be adapted.
