nice, how do you like your xd i shot a 9mm and handled a .45 the mane difference i found was the grip was a touch more straight than the glock and the trigger reset was longer other then that i really like the feel. but im a glock man owned 10 of em shoot my 34 in matches.

I only have three.
Marlin .22
Mossberg 500 12 Ga.
Winchester 44/40 (very old but in exellent condition)
My uncle gave me the winchester on the morning of my grandfathers funeral. It is in a hand made case that my great-grandfather made and on the inside of the case is a Michigan Deer/Bear licence from 1936.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
I'm not inclined to go into details...just because, but lets just say I'm doing alright. I will say this, as a carry weapon I use a Sig Sauer P223 in .40 cal., and as much as I am FIRMLY against 99% of all gun laws, I follow them to the letter, and will have nothing to do with anyone that tries to shortcut them. I take my rights very seriously...to bad the politicians and gun grabbers don't.

I really like the XD, feels better in my hand than the Glock does. Plus slap in a 13 round clip, I mean a 10... and you're good to go. Put some for the new hi-viz triangular suresight sights on it, and it's much easier to run and gun. I'm thinking about getting a EFK Dragonfire comped barrel for it too.

I'm surprised you don't have a Glock .45.

glock 21's grip is a little to big for me ive been thinking about a .45 gap. I am fine with my .40's and i really like my 34 for competition ive done some work to it so it runs real nice.

I have only one gun, CZ-75 SemiCompact (9x19 mm). This model production was closed about 2 years ago and therefore I haven't got a direct link to its details (only this one in Czech). It can be considered as a hybrid model of the standard version CZ-75B and the shortened version CZ-75 Compact: it has the standard model frame and magazine (full capacity - 16 cartriges), but its slide and barrel are shortened like in the Compact model.

currently the only one I have is a howa lightning 1500 in .243 win., it's the cheapest bolt action gun/scope combo I have ever bought and its also the most accurate :)

My wife and I are considering taking some formal training in weapons handling, just so we aren't so ignorant of what responsibilities come with handling (let alone owning) a weapon.

What should I be looking for in a weapons range/training facility?
From the "definitely avoid" to the "recommended"?
Also, what are some good "training" weapons I should be handling, and what differences do I need to be aware of in common safeties, etc...

Again, very ignorant here so don't laugh.
I just feel irresponsible in never handling (and respecting) a weapon before, even though I don't ever plan to own one.

It's good that you want to take formal training, I highly recommend it, once you get that under your belt, you can tackle it on your own. If you were out here, I'd offer.
I suggest asking around the nearest ranges, more than one, to find out the skill level of the trainer that they have on staff. Do no take any kid that's only been shooting a year or two, you want someone who has been doing it for a fairly sizeable time.
They'll show you different stance, and ways of holding the gun.
Find a gun that feels comfortable in your hand, not what they stick in it. And depening on your wife's hand a smaller caliber will be better, as a larger handgun might scare.
Sometimes it helps to train using realistic looking targets, versus paper, so you can vizualize what You Might have to do.
Train and prepare for the worse, because you never know.
A clean facility, well ventilated and friendly helpful staff.
Remember knowledge is power. You may never raise a firearm in defense of your own or a loved ones life, but knowing how to do it, and feeling confident is half the battle.
Hope that helps.

What do any of you think of those high capacity .45 cal Para-Ordnance guns? I've been wanting one of those, preferebly a P13. That of an HK USP preferebly in .45 if not in .40 cal

And here's one of my favorite links: world.guns.ru

I knew someone who got one of the first ones (he was a total psycho)
I had to work it over for him to get it running right, but it was fine after that.
I think now-a-days, cost is a bit high, versus XDs or Glocks. One para, you can get 2 Glocks or XD's.
Like an Ed Brown .45, high quality and I'm sure it will fire every time, but at over $2000 a pop, seems a bit much for my taste.
Don't get me wrong, I'd take a free one though.
The HK is a fine weapon, they just redesigned/restyled it.

I have a Para P16 limited and can't praise it enough. I've shot IPSC with the P16 and my Sig Sauer P226 9mm. The Para is in a league with the Sig. No doubt about it.

Prof: I am happy to hear that you are considering training for you and your lovely wife. I only hope that all persons considering the CCW permit would learn proper training. If every person applying for a CCW, not only went thru CCW training, but also had to perform IPSC courses/training the graduates would be so much more informed/trained - IMO.

Just because it's an Amendment doesn't mean people shouldn't be compelled to learn how to handle and respect them.
It's one of those ultimate ironies that we have to be responsible about our Rights and freedoms to ensure they continue.
And those who are not responsible are the ones who ruin it for everyone else who is.

Kinda like voting in ignorance of basic, American Civics too. ;)

all advice so far has been really good, but dont forget about the basics. once you learn proper handling and firearm saftey just going out and plinking with a .22 either rifle or pistol can teach you a great deal. They are inexpensive to buy $80.00 - as high as you want to go. and ammo is really cheap. shooting a .22 you will be able to practice proper handling plus you will be abel to put numerous rounds down range and not spend a fortune. most bricks, or boxes of 500-550 can be bougth for around $10.00 pretty soon after shooting for a while it will become muscle memory and safety will come naturally so you can start having fun. I do agree though if you are going to get a real trainer you deffenatly need to check their background. for my niece's I got them airsoft guns and told them that if they ever wanted to shoot with me i had to see that they could handle those first and never cross the orange muzzle across anything they didnt want to destroy. my youngest is now shooting .22 pistols really good. mostly just remember that guns are very much tools but can also bring a lifetime of reacreational pleasure.
