'Gunman' Shot 21 Times By NY Cops And Lives

Dunno what to say about this :dunno:

A 23-year-old man has dodged death after being shot 21 times by police during a shoot-out at a New York street party.

Family confirmed Angel Alvarez was even talking after the shoot-out

Four armed officers fired 46 bullets at Angel Alvarez after he allegedly shot a fellow partygoer - but they missed all his vital organs.

The suspect remains in a critical condition after being hit in his arms, legs, abdomen and jaw.

Alvarez's sister told the New York Daily News he is already talking in hospital and is expected to survive.

He allegedly shot Luis Soto, 21, after a row over a woman before turning his gun on officers who were monitoring the Harlem street party.

Two policemen and three bystanders were also wounded, though none seriously, in an ensuing gun battle along Lenox Avenue and 143rd Street, at 3am on Sunday.

Tests later showed the bullet that killed Mr Soto was fired from a police gun.

Police had initially claimed Alvarez killed Mr Soto dead before shooting at officers.

A forensic pathologist told the Daily News that Alvarez's survival against a hail of bullets was unprecedented.

"I would say more than 20 gunshot wounds is a record," Dr Vincent DiMaio said.

"Of course, the real issue is where you get shot. One bullet can kill you, but believe it or not, a body can survive a lot of bullet wounds."

Another big black eye for the NYC police dept. They have to restrain themselves (more training is needed I guess) from emptying thier guns with little regard for where their bullets end up like they have in several recent caes in the last few years.I live in the NY area and while I have a lot of respect for the NY cops generally they have a problem with this sort of thing.I heard one of the bystanders shot in the leg by the police is suing for 20 million, while he may not get that much I'm sure he will get a big award.

I bet if he had been a non-English speaking immigrant reaching for his ID they'd have killed him .

Umm, so did Alvarez not shoot Soto? The article says a cops bullet KILLED Soto. It doesn't say it was the only bullet to enter him.

It also doesn't say who shot the bystanders. I'm assuming it wasn't from police fire. Eh, just what Harlem needed. Things have been turning around over there, even with this economy.

Never even noticed that when reading it. If they claim Alvarez had shot Soto dead before they got there and then it is proven that a Cops bullet killed Soto then they got some explaining to do  They didn't even manage to 'silence' the main witness.

I'm assuming it was just a clusterfuck. Nothing points to wrongdoing by the police, instead the story seems to be Alverez's amazing bullet absorption. That's how it's being covered everywhere. Oddly enough, the story doesn't even seem to be a big deal.

This is from a pretty liberal NY paper: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2010/08/21_times_harlem.php

The Sky story seemed to be implying an initial cover-up, but now I see that seems like some underhanded sensationalism. Or maybe I'm read into things a bit too cautiously. I no fan of the police, but it seems they aren't the subject of this story. This time. The NYPD needs Chow Yun Fat. He doesn't miss.

You folks need to read the story. Its already been established the fatal bullet to Soto was from the police and all the other people shot besides Soto (Two policemen and three bystanders) were shot by the police as well as Alvarez 21 times. The cops are being too reckless when they just empty their guns (40 something bullets shot) under almost any circumtance.Hell they did the same thing to Sean Bell and Amadou Diallo and they weren't even armed.

Like Tupac says..."bustas shot me 5 times, real niggas don't die.

Well, I'm arguing with a guy who doesn't know to separate sentences with both a [snarky]period and a space[/snarky], so shame on me, but I have read the story. From several sources now. No article is arguing that the cops didn't fatally shoot Soto. No article is suggesting that the cops were or weren't reckless. But mentioning that Soto was shot multiple times, yet only the fatal bullet was specifically attributed to the police, suggests that Alverez may have provoked the incident. You know, by initially shooting Soto. A clear account is all I ask for. It seems that clarity is shunned by journalists these days.

I was hoping that this guy was deflecting the bullets with the power of rock n roll like Ted Nugent did in that Damn Yankees video "Can You Take Me High Enough"

.40S&W. Glock 22 I believe. Don't know the grain...I assume it's mid range since they use JHP.

Well I'll be! It seems at least one of the officers was carrying a 9mm. http://www.policemag.com/Channel/Pa...-Round-Killed-Instigator-of-Harlem-Brawl.aspx It doesn't say if he was beat or working UC/PC.

I can't imagine the standard service NYPD round is 9mm. Nearly every department in this country jumped to .40 after 9-11. Some of them simple southern folks way down yonder even thought ahead enough to give the 10mm a second wind.

Federal "Expanding FMJ'' maybe?

This story is astonishing!

Face palm? At me, man? Last I read, NYPD had .40JHP as their duty SSR. I don't know the grain because I know an issue was overpenetration. That's why 10mm was out of the question for most departments. I remember living in NY when officers had to carry heavy, slow 9mm ball. As if the Matix and Platt incident never went down.
