You know, people are always telling to grow a thicker skin on the internet (or this forum for example), if you can't handle being unfriendly and rude (and are insulting all the time).

So why can't we simply say to those unfriendly people, that they should stop being mean and start being friendly instead?

While I agree that people can be a bit harsh on the internet, those who communicate on the internet in a "public" setting do need to have a rather thick skin. When we state our opinions in a forum, we are leaving ourselves open to scrutiny. Opinions should be respected as a whole, but they should not be held as sacred "untouchable" statements.

True. But on the other hand maturity also generally entails that one won't act like a juvenile asshole. In most places were one to act like a juvenile asshole it would see some type of repercussions. Here? Not so much.

Now, sure... you can ignore it. But ignoring bad behavior only takes things so far. WW2 started in 1939. Active American involvement didn't really occur until 1941. Did those two years of ignoring **** until it was made personal help things? Probably not.
