What Babe Ruth did in his era was unprecedented. He was so far ahead of any other player of his time...and for many years after. And keep in mind he did all this while being quite the 'party ******'. :)

Some facts about Ruth

*In 1919 he hit 29 home runs which beat the old record of 27 which was set in 1884.

*Ruth's 1920 season turned into one that no one had ever come close to seeing before. He hit 54 home runs, smashing his year-old record, batted .376, and led the league in runs (158), RBIs (137), bases on balls (148), and his slugging average of .847 was a major league record for over 80 years (Barry Bonds eclipsed it with a .863 mark in 2001). Ruth's season was so dominating it led to one of the most amazing statistics in baseball history. In 1920, Ruth
out-homered all but one team in baseball, as only the Philadelphia Phillies with 64 hit more home runs than Ruth.
(How many steroids would Bonds have to take to hit more homers than an entire team? :1orglaugh )

*It is no coincidence that the 1920 Yankees shattered the league attendance mark. The Yankees drew nearly 1.3 million fans, breaking the old mark of the 1908 New York Giants by nearly 400,000 fans.

*As historic as Ruth's 1920 season was, his 1921 season was even better. Ruth's 1921 season is statistically the greatest season by any batter in major league history. This season merits a mention of most of his numbers, with how some of them rank all-time for a single season. In 152 games, Ruth batted .378, had 204 hits, 44 doubles, 16 triples, 59 home runs (8th all-time), scored 177 runs (2nd all-time), had 171 RBIs (7th all-time), 144 bases on balls, with 119 extra base hits (1st all-time), an .846 slugging average (3rd all-time), and amassed 457 total bases (1st all-time).

*1927 Ruth hits 60 home runs. In addition to the home runs, Ruth batted .356 and drove in 164 runs.

*Career batting average of .342.

I could go on and on...but you get the idea. The man was a true legend.

Damn right! I agree 100%...no one comes close. Not to mention the fact that he single-handedly resurrected baseball in the aftermath of the Black Sox scandal in 1919 which cast a pall over the credibility of MLB. After the Babe came along, baseball became king in America. No telling what might have happened had he not been there.

I don't know who would be considered the best of all time right now, maybe Ted Williams, but if he keeps going Pujols will go down as the best ever. His stats are higher than any player ever during the same length of time.

You've got to be kidding me....no one in this modern over-payed ********* game can even hold a candle to some of baseball's all-time greats. What made them great was not just their stats, but their passion for the game. Baseball for them was a love and passion, not just a business decision.

well i guess it wont be Mark Mcgwire....

I don't want to comment on the past.
But really as of right now,
1: Babe Ruth
2: Stan Musiual
3: Hank Aaron
4: Ty Cobb
5: Ted Williams
6: Cal Ripken,Jr.
7: Tony Gwynn
8: Mike Shmidt
9: Albert Pulous
10: Ken Griffey,Jr.

only one name comes to mind for me. that is tyrus raymond cobb.

babe ruth is pure legend and lore. ted williams is probably the greatest hitter of all time. walter johnson is the greatest pitcher of all time. (100+ shutouts in any era is astounding) johnny bench is the greatest catcher of all time. i will leave first base alone. too many options for the weakest position in baseball. robby alomar is the greatest 2B of all time. ozzie smith is the greatest SS of all time. brooks robinson is the greatest 3B of all time. out field i will leave alone. way too many to consider. but, the greatest player of all time is ty cobb. the man could do it all, including spike your face at third base.

Personally I don't follow baseball, but I read a book about this fellow, and I remember that he was pretty influencing to the world of baseball

ok best player off steriods...WILLIE MAYS
best player ON steriods....Barry Bonds
Best player on crack....Darryl Strawberry

well looks like bonds might not sign with the giants after all.....i really hope he just retires and leaves the great hank aarons record alone...bonds doesnt deserve to be the homerun champ

Willie Mays, hands down.

The Say Hey *** could do it all. Hit, hit for power, hit for average, run, play defense, he did it all better than anyone else.

I once had the chance to meet Doug Harvey, probably the most respected umpire ever in the Majors. He umpired for over 40 years (from around 1950 to 1995) and I asked him two questions. One, who was the greatest position player you ever saw- he said hands down, by far it was Willie Mays. Nobody was even close. I also asked him who the best pitcher he ever saw- he said Sandy Koufax. He umpired against these guys many times and these were his opinions. I couldn't disagree. Here is my top ten.
1) Willie Mays
2) Ted Williams
3) Babe Ruth
4) Joe Dimaggio
5) Mickey Mantle
6) Alex Rodriguez
7) Henry Aaron
8) Barry Bonds
9) Cal Ripken
10) Ty Cobb

I think when talking about greatest of all time, you have to include all facets of the game, not just hitting. You have to include defense, speed, base-running, an all around game.

True, but not all facets of the game are equal. I'm surprised you think Joe DiMaggio is better than Mickey Mantle (or most of the others in that list besides Ripken). Ripken, unless you’re counting sentimental reasons and not just performance, doesn't belong anywhere near the discussion of greatest of all time. He seems like a good human being but he's maybe in the top 50.

I have to disagree on some of those.

2nd Baseman better than Roberto Alomar: Joe Morgan (even if I think he is an idiot as an commentator), Eddie Collins, Rogers Hornsby (even if he was one of the biggest jerks in baseball ever), *** Lajoie, and Ryne Sandberg. Alomar isn't even the best 2nd baseman of his era. That would be Craig Biggio.

Shortstops better than Ozzie Smith: Honus Wagner by a light year, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Arky Vaughan, Cal Ripken, Robin Yount, and Ernie Banks

Third Baseman better than Brooks Robinson: Mike Schmidt, George Brett, Eddie Mathews, Wade Boggs, Home Run Baker, and Ron Santo
