Before and after McChrystal's removal, a flurry of White House activity

After he spent more than 15 hours flying from his post on the other side of the world, it took less than 30 minutes Wednesday morning for Gen. Stanley McChrystal to find out what most in Washington assumed was coming: He was out.

The Oval Office meeting, alone with the president, was brief and to the point. They talked about the Rolling Stone article that effectively ended McChrystal's career, senior officials said, adding that President Obama was genuinely saddened, but resolute.

And then, with no fanfare, the general slipped out the side entrance of the West Wing, his motorcade captured by cameras.

The decision, which Obama described as one made with "considerable regret," began a flurry of activity designed to reassure allies and supporters that the war strategy in Afghanistan is working, and, as Obama said, that a change in leadership does not amount to a change in policy.

Immediately after meeting with McChrystal, Obama gathered in the Oval Office with his national security brain trust: Vice President Biden, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, national security adviser James Jones, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates.

For 45 minutes, the group chewed over what to do next,

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
He had to go. The military is a paragon of discipline and he crossed the line. No way could Obama maintain his authority if he chose to forgive insubordinate acts like the idiotic comments McChrystal willingly gave to Rolling Stone. He committed political suicide when he did....what in the world was he thinking??!! :dunno::confused: Too bad because he is (was) a good commander in so many ways.

Alternatively, Petraeus is a terrific choice to supplant him and I believe that there will be little partisan dissent over his appointment as McChrystal's replacement.

There is certainly precedent for this.
Truman cashiered McCarthur.
Lincoln endured repeated offenses (and failures) by McClellan, in main because McClellan was so popular with his men, but finally sent him packing.

Necessary, I suppose - though I'd think that would be a given since Petraeus is McChrystal's boss.

I would have less of a problem with him if he just had a difference of opinion on the strategy or tactics being used and expressed that, but when a military officer goes into personal insults of others in the military or government he had better not only be right, but the people he's insulting have to absolutely deserve it for it to be alright in my eyes. Even then he would have to realize his career is probably over.

There isn't a room big enough on this planet to fit McChrystal and his ego.

I'm guessing McChrystal wants to run for Congress or Senate as a Republican and this was the ~BIG SPLASH~ to launch his campaign?

He's no MacArthur.........Truman was a commie supporter, just like Barry.....that's where the similarities end.

(by the way, before you jokers start fire storming me, I'm fucking kidding!)

Petra dude has an awesome name. Mcchrystal sounds like a mc donalds mixed with a chrystal. I think even his name gave him away that he was working for big business.

Well I agree with McChrystals view that Biden has the intelligence of a kumquat and Holbrooke is a giant assbag.

Whatever your political affiliation is, you have to admire the way Obama handles things. He could have played the "tough cowboy" and publicly undressed this guy the way his predacessors would have, but he handled it behind closed doors with dignity. That's "Presidential".

With Petraeus taking over, will the policy in Afghanistan change?

It would seem doubtful, being that McChrystal was a disciple of Petraeus military doctrine. TBH though, it doesn't help to have a general so willing to badmouth allies at the helm, so this change is probably for the best.

I fully understand why Gen. McChrystal is getting the boot. That said, those kinds of comments aren't entirely limited to the brass, the same types of comments are made through out the military as a whole. The difference being that most people have enough sense to not make those known to your superiors.

he keeps gettin richa but he can't get his pick-cha on the cover of the rolling stone. bet he'll be rethinking that interview with all that free time he now has.

Hmm. How did your form your opinions? Through firsthand knowledge or media reports :dunno: Could you cite any specific things that Richard Holbrooke did to incur your low opinion? What type of fruit correlates to Sarah Palin's intelligence? I ask because most people, even conservatives, think Biden wiped her ass in the debate they had :dunno:

I agree completely. The smooth way this has been handled there isn't anyway for the story to go. McChrystral has to be careful too because if he goes over to FixedNoise and moans to Hannity or Orally, he will come off looking like a petty douchebag.

We have to assume that McChrystal knew this would get him fired. So, what was his motive? Is he wanting to run for political office? Did he hear from his "sources" that Obama really likes Petraeus and wanted to "reassign" McChrystal out of Afghanistan?

Petraeus was the guy who almost passed out before Congress recently, right? Maybe McChrystal went "Roman Senator" and tried to slip something into the water of a political rival...:dunno::1orglaugh:thefinger

Damn, you'd think this guy would have brushed up on his history and looked at what happened to his predecessors when they started shooting off their mouth and getting to big for their britches. Oh well, later McChrystal burger.

What kind of fruit correlates to Palin's intel? Uh maybe a mango?

I learned about "Plugs" Biden and Hollerbrooke during the 90s when both excelled at extreme anti Serb douchebaggery during the Balkan Civil war.
Both of these so called gentlemen leave a lot to be desired.
