Formula 1 2012

I know it would drive up costs. But just imagine if they'd turn the engineers and designers loose, allowing (even encouraging) that ^^^ sort of innovation again?

Ex-Formula One team owner Eddie Jordan has been awarded an honorary OBE (Order of the British Empire) in recognition of his services to charity and motor racing.

Irishman Jordan, 64, founded the team that bore his name (now ***** India) in 1990. It went on to compete in 250 Grands Prix, winning four, before he sold out to the Midland Group in 2005. In addition to his charity work, Jordan is now best known as an F1 television pundit.

“What a wonderful moment in my life,” said Jordan of the news. “I am hugely surprised and greatly overjoyed to receive this magnificent honour, however it would not have been possible without the help of my ******, the Jordan Grand Prix F1 team, CLIC Sargent and in more recent times the BBC F1 team.”

Jordan famously gave Michael Schumacher his F1 race debut at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix. He also gave Ayrton Senna and Damon Hill their first Formula Three drives.

Red Bull’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to motorsport by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

Newey’s Red Bull cars have won the constructors’ championship for the past two seasons and he has previously designed machines that have taken titles for Williams and McLaren.

Former Formula One driver Nigel Mansell, who won the 1992 world championship in the Newey-designed Williams FW14B, was also in attendance at the ceremony. Mansell received a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) from Her Majesty the Queen for services to ******** and young people in his role as president of charity UK Youth.

The Briton, already an OBE, was famed for his committed racing style during a Formula One career which spanned 15 years and featured 31 Grand Prix victories, 32 pole positions and 30 fastest laps.

That pic brings back the best of memories. It's truly amazing that right there, we are looking at 11 World Driving Championships!

Here's a couple of questions that I *think* I know the answer to: of the men in that photo, how many drove (raced or tested) an Indy car?

And here is kind of a trick question: who was the last World Driving Champion to race an Indy car?

I know Mansell won in his rookie year in CART Indy in 1993 having won the F1 championship in 1992. He was also Rookie of the Year in 1993. I don't know who else of those pictured drove Indy cars, though.

He sure did, Lars. And that was a fantastic year in both CART IndyCar and Formula One ('94 was horrible!).

Tell ya what, if an OCSM can answer one or both questions, what say we F1 fans agree to give her our votes through at least the first round? So, don't anybody answer and let's see if any of the OCSM's will lurk this thread and give the right answer(s). Hey, it's an "easy" way to pick up some votes, yeah? :dunno:

Formula 1 was awesome during the late 80 - early 90' (espacially the Prost VS Senna rivalry) but I think this season is gonna be good.

But I have the answer to the second question!!

Apr.9 (GMM) Monisha Kaltenborn will become F1's first ever female team boss.

That is the revelation of Peter Sauber, who at the age of 68 has hinted he might call it a day before his 70th birthday.

Indian Kaltenborn, 41, is already Hinwil based Sauber's chief executive, while Peter Sauber remains the team principal.
Sauber, in fact, has already departed the pitwall once before, when he sold his team to BMW and handed over to Mario Theissen.

Somewhat reluctantly, he returned in 2010, having rescued the Hinwil based employees in the **** of German carmaker's sudden withdrawal.
