It's a good thing if it will mean the end of the SUV and the big pickup truck.

:why:
Get real! The big pickup truck is as American as baseball, apple pie & Chevy!
Are you freaking kidding me? You want to ban big pickups (the bread and butter for thousands upon thousands of small businesses) and SUVs (a Latino American must have)?

We're a nation of people who prefer diversity of choice, get over it!

Unfortunately probably the majority of Americans can't afford that new hybrid Chevy upgrade. I sure as hell can't, and nor would I want to. My Chev (4-banger) is sufficient for me driving in the neighborhood I do currently.

Yep. Or cellulosic/switchgrass ethanol:

Switchgrass Ethanol

For anyone who doubts the power (and reliability) of a car powered by biodiesel or ethanol, attend an ALMS sports car race and then prepare to be shocked.

Why do Americans continue to whine about buying oil from people who hate us, yet refuse to push for and embrace alternative fuels that are not just renewable, but also would support the economy HERE???!!! :dunno:

Because alternate fuels do not support large, loud pickups; because the people who are truly in charge of this decision are also making the largest amount of cash off this little enterprise while raping far away lands; because change is scawy.

Racing is life... anything else is just waiting.
how do you produce more bio-fuel without producing less food, or chopping down more forest to get more land?

Please read the link I provided in the previous post. Switchgrass can be grown on land that is currently unsuitable for food crops. And here is another link which goes into even greater detail:

Net energy of cellulosic ethanol from switchgrass

For an alternative transportation fuel to be a substitute for conventional gasoline, the alternative fuel should (i) have superior environmental benefits, (ii) be economically competitive, (iii) have meaningful supplies to meet energy demands, and (iv) have a positive NEV (11). The results of this study demonstrate that switchgrass grown and managed as a biomass energy crop produces >500% more renewable energy than energy consumed in its production and has significant environmental benefits, as estimated by net GHG emissions as well as soil conservation benefits (1). In this study, we used a constant previously published conversion rate. It is expected that biomass conversion rates will be improved in the future because of both genetic modifications of biomass feedstocks and improvements in conversion technology, which should result in improvement in net energy for switchgrass. Compared with low-input prairies, switchgrass grown and managed as a biomass energy crop can produce significantly greater biomass per hectare, which makes it a more feasible system for providing meaningful supplies of biomass to meet energy demands; it also has fully equivalent NEV.

'feel for our friends in Blighty – the UK recently saw gas prices spike to $7.30 a gallon' yes but over two thirds of that is tax! The fuels the cheap part! But thanks for thinking about us :tinhat:

Very similar here in Stupid California. Drive one state over and the price drops over .40 cents a gallon. We're taxed to death for a gallon of gas because this state is fucking retarded.

And the main tag line is a little misleading. He said you might see 5 buck gas in the next decade. Not 2012.

I strongly believe that fuel/oil should be removed from commodities trading. Right now shit-head fuck-face investors are "speculating" again on the oil. Which is helping drive it against the weakened dollar and winter costs. Also the major oil companies don't have to elevate costs. But they're more than willing to screw over the American public for that extra 12 billion in profit in the first quarter.

I don't even want to think of the situation 10 years from now. At this rate there will be scarce improvement in green technology. As a nation we give too much control to OPEC and the oil industry, now we're overly dependent on those greedy bastards.

I think it's hilarious how the price of gas goes up when it's in high demand but it also goes up when demand and consumption go down. You really can't win with crude oil.

Gas is 7,69 dollars a gallon right now in the Netherlands and it has been hovering around that price for months now so I don't feel sorry for you poor Americans.
America is much less densely populated than the European countries and as a consequence people generally have much greater distance to travel between home and office. 32 to 50 km distance in each direction are not in the least bit unusual . . . . do you still hate us? :D
You must understand that for America's land mass
Hydrogen. It's the most abundant element in the universe and we never run out of it.
Germany along with BMW have made a great case for hydo energy, however, it's not very transportation friendly meaning that, for now (or the last time I checked anyway), it's distribution is limited to the points of actual production. ;)

I drive 90 km each day to get to work and back again so I'm not really impressed by those numbers :1orglaugh

No! Say it isn't so, Stanley! :D

I just bought a bi-fuel car. LPG is currently sitting at about 66 euro cents a liter and I'm fueling up for about 26 euro a week. That translates into $34 a week.

Sure, I can only get up to about 110km when driving into the wind and getting over the bridge that connects my city to the mainland, and sure, it takes me a few minutes to get back to 120km when some asshole going 100 decides to jump out infront of me. But I'm not spending 80 euro a week to fuel up damnit.

Oh yea, and no road taxes rules.

You have to take everything John Hofmeister says with a grain of salt. Though he predicts $5/gallon gas in the US by the end of 2012, like others pointed out, most analysts don't see it going that high until the end of the next decade. Furthermore, what is John Hofmeister's answer to keep it from happening? Drill baby drill........namely in the Gulf of Mexico!!! Now who would benefit from that.....Hmmmmm.....certainly not Shell Oil (not that John Hofmeister owns stock or anything)! John Hofmeister is talking out his ass to try to scare ignorant Americans into panicing & pushing the issue to open the Gulf back up to drilling! He's just trying to scare people so he and his cronies at Shell can profit from it! Hell big oil learned a long time ago that they can charge whatever they want, and we will pay it! We can let them drill all they want.....they'll still charge us whatever they want for it!

The real solution isn't drill baby drill! It's moving us off fossil fuels, and the technology of the early 20th century......and moving to new fuel sources (not bio-fuels either.....they drive up the costs of food products....such as corn), and new technologies for the 21st century! The US needs to stop being spoiled.....we have been too long, and we need to stop living in the past! Why is it that high speed rail is very successful in Europe and Asia, yet we have barely even made any inroads in the area? Is it a coincidence that big oil (and even the car companies even) actually have been lobbying against public transportation initiatives in the United States for years? They want us all to each drive our own car (to Hell with carpooling too) and burning as much gas as possible!!! Guess that is to be expected in a land where they even stopped building sidewalks until recently! We need to stop allowing ourselves to be slaves to big oil.......and that doesn't mean we should become slaves to something else, such as big corn, either!!!

There are a myriad of ways to power a country on renewables alone. Wind, wave, hydro, solar, you can even pedal a bike in yer house and make energy! Scotland has the potential to power itself eight times over with it's renewable energy sources. If we get folk onto electric cars, or use some other sustainable fuel for vehicles, we're laughing even more.

So the excuse that a huge country like the USA can't change from oil is ridiculous. Alternative technologies won't develop until they start getting used. Invest in it, create your own industries for it, and reap the future benefits...

I can see it.

On the one side we have slick oil profiteers who will do, say or kill almost anything to advance their profit interests. On the other, the progressive elites who see extreme oil and gas prices as a means of effecting behavioral change for conservation.

In the end, we get :nannerf2:

I'm gonna beat WTC7WasPulled/MasterRoshi to it:

Sorry boy/s :hatsoff:

yes this is good and I still would like to know whatever happened to the inventor who made the engine that ran on H2O, he just disappeared and was never heard from again, very scary and if you think 5 dollars a gallon is bad, wait til it hits 10 dollars a gallon in the US, yes my friends hyper inflation is real and on the way in the US and this is because the dollar is slowly being removed as the world's reserve currency and leaders like Ron Paul and his son Rand Paul understand this but most people don't understand or don't care to understand basic economics and so americans keep voting for democrats and republicans thinking they are gonna save north america and the world, well when the dollar collapses and it will, maybe then americans will realize how far gone we really are but by then it will probably be too late

Why save the world, when you can rule it?

Well, setting the elasticity of the oil market but a bbl of oil averaged just under $30 in 2000. Eight years later it averaged over $90 a bbl.

To what do you attribute this? A threefold increase in consumption over 8 years?
