dont get discouraged yo. guitar is challenging, dont let its popularity convince you its easy. 75% of people that have guitars dont even play them. ive seen it. i got into drumming first because guitar was just too complicated and there are no chords to learn. but the truth is, it takes a little bit of knowledge and if you can learn about 5 chords, e, e minor, a, a minor, c, and g, you cabn play a hell of a lot of stuff. i get by on those chords mixed with power chords, i tend to stay away from b, and d, sometimes fs.

http://www.guitarchordsmagic.com/images/guitar-chord-charts/power-guitar-chord-chart.gif

i tend to start most of my chords off holding an e since its the easiest and it compliments c, g, and a, very nicely and its easy to get to them from e.

with power chords you hold your fingers in the same fucking position on different areas of the guitar, those are the chords used for the heavy parts of the songs. hell, depending on what kind of music you want to play, you can just play power chords and fuck the regular chords. look at the ramones. 2 or 3 power chords and you're good to go.

How's The Fingers Legz??? The Skin Should Be Getting A Little Thicker Towards Callus. It Will Make It More Enjoyable For Ya. Hey Dudes, What Happening With "UltimateGuitar.com" Web Site??? I never realized this many people played guitar :)
Anyway my only experience with guitar playing was in elementary school when I felt like a complete retard. I too started practicing drums but didn't really work out.
This thread has got me interested in learning some though, a lot of great advice.

ultimate-guitar.com is working fine for me, but you might want to try www.911tabs.com -- it's the google of guitar tabs. Technically though, the sharing of sheet music/tabs in this way is an infringement of copyright -- the MPA is coming to get you!

fuck the MPA...whoever they are :dunno:

It really depends what you want to do, google "Guitar Tabs". TAB, or Tablature, is a format for reading music which requires much less musical skill or experience. There's tons of sites with all the popular songs in this format, it basically tells you where to put your fingers, and what strings to play, in a printable text format. It's great for beginners. Lessons would be your next step.

Your a full-time musician? Man do i Envy you.

Your a full-time musician? Man do i envy you.

Unfortunately, Im making about the same as I did 20 years ago and now the cost-of-living has gone through the roof

In the 80s it was great money (and multi-night gigs - most of my money went up my nose)
Throughout the 90s, it was good money ( and diasppearing multi-night gigs)
Nowadays, not-so-good money ( and I am gigging 5 to 7 days/nights per week all over the place at various venues)
However, I still make my house payments, bills, and feed my daughter by playing music and it beats the hell out of a lot of other jobs..........

Been learning since late november/early december.. (honestly holiday hours really stifled that in December, tho!)

Things I've learned so far..

Tuning. If you play it for an hour.. it's outta tune the next day. If the temperature goes up or down about 5/10 degrees.. it's outta tune. If you bend the note.. even faster.

Learning what a note really is.. A minor, A major, open A.. etc. I still lean on tabs to show me what's what.. but it's like reading a spanish magazine at the store.. it's still a bunch of dots to tell you where your fingers should be, but sometimes I'm like hey! That's a G major! And.. I dont like bending my fingers for that particular note! bah! :)

Switching, sliding and hammer ons/pull offs. Practicepracticepracticepracticepracticepractice! Then let the creases and skin grow back on your fingertips.

Technical info. Yeah.. I know what every part of the damn thing is, and I know to leave the rest of the strings on while changing.. tension on the neck.. etc. So that's the waveform.. and the difference between single and humbucker pickups.. and.. blah blah. Now would I ever notice the difference while I'm on this dirt-cheap starter guitar? lol a'course not. But one day..

One day! I'll pick up a Les Paul '56 Goldtop, replace the pickups with TV Jones Classics.. and a decent Fender amp to really get the sound I'm looking for. :) But right now.. hey, I'm just trying to get better/faster. :sigh:

(Or a Gretsch 6120 if I have a couple thousand laying around)

lol, my girlfriend got me a huge full blown poster of a picture I took of the crowd at the Heaven & Hell show last year. I was right at the gate in front of the band & I got one of the general admission and seats crowds. Everytime I practice (for the love of the art) I look at that wall and it's just too funny yet inspiring in a way.
