? for guitar players

That was 11 years ago now i play a 1973 fender strat the jeff beck, eric clapton way.

really I don't even have that right now. It's a beginner set, a guitar and amp that costs that much. I think my *** has an old guitar I could use to at least get the feel for it before I dump money on anything. Or at least he used to, I know I've seen one at my parents house along long time ago. That would be ideal actually. I could learn for practically next to nothing and if I like it enough then I spend the money and get something nice!

That's probably not a bad idea.

I have had a first guitar from a fea market, my mum spent 20 bucks for it.

It was cheap, it wasn't that great sounding, but I was really going for it, learning some tunes from a neighbour and from then I bought songbooks, exchanged them with others, and 1 1/2 years later I got my Yairi, which cost 500 bucks back then, I have it fo 25 years now, it's a great dreadnought ideal for acoustic rock. If you like rock, and want a powerful sound, I would always go for a Gibson Les Paul :) But do that later, start with an acoustic

Legz, you've gotten lots of great advise here. You've already taken the first step...you're asking for help. I own 10 different guitars. (see this can become habit forming) both electric and acoustic. From Martin, Gibson ,Yamaha (my great sounding 12 string)all the way to a Resonator made by National that was made in the 1920's. My advise on learning to play is just this. Go with what you like. If you can read music you're way ahead. I can't... I play by ear. What I like to do is this; I'll choose a cd of one of my favorite artists, go to the music store and see if they have the song book of that cd. Usually it is there. The songs have the diagrams above the music showing you where to place your fingers. Next just sit and play along with the cd until you get the hang of it. Have fun.

An good acoustic guitar should be fine for a beginner and you can spend the money you save on porn! Or, as others have advised, songbooks! or even magazines which have song transcriptions in them.

But if you want to play Metal/Hard Rock I suggest an Acoustic!

Why? Because the notes you play are the same as an Electric but the strings are not. An acoustic guitar with nylon strings will be easier on your fingertips so you can play longer - which is important because the more you play the stronger the muscles in your hands and fingers will become. No only that, but through repetition your hands and fingers will "remember" the chords and scales so you don't have to.

(Learn both chords and scales at the same time if you can because they are related. And knowledge of one will help you understand the other.)

Also, with an acoustic guitar it's you doing the playing. It's you that makes the sound - not an amp. So if you want a hard aggressive sound you have to play the guitar in such a way to get that sound - maybe with a hard pleck striking the strings **********. Or if you want a softer sound you could just use your fingers and gently caress the strings. And these techniques can be used later when you get your electric guitar.

Electric guitars are all about tone - its an amp thing. Acoustic guitars are all about touch - its a finger thing.

And since you've already got fingers - and an amp will cost you money - get an acoustic and see what you can do with it. Have Fun! and Rock On!

Well, once you get a guitar, practice scales.

ah yes, scales are great. you gotta learn the pentatonic scales, but fisrt regular chords. a, e, g, etc.

Take up the drums, thats what I did

the drums are a hell of a lot more fun if you ask me. thats where i started and eventually ended up experimenting with guitar. now i play both for various projects.

but legz, i know its because of guitar hero, admit it. c'mon.

my advice is pick up an acoustic. trust me, its way better for you to learn on an acoustic, since they have the rich sound. its much more fulfilling and inspiring and more responsive and you get sick of it. you cant really land a good electric for as much as a good acoustic.

im self-taught. never had a lesson in my life. do you need lessons? nah, obviously you dont. would it be a good idea if you have the extra scratch? i dont see why not, but it does add up. is that an issue? would u be comfortable in front of someone?

get one of those giant guitar chord posters that show you where to keep your fingers, and maybe a cheap beginer's dvd off ebay for like 2.00. youll get the standard strumming patters (and rhythms) and the basic chords and thats all you need.

after that you can cheat with power chords like everyone else does and youll be playing guitar.

learn drop d-tuning and you never have to hold a chord again. pentatonic scales will have you doing solos very quickly.

:1orglaugh yea actually! After playing all GHI, II, and now III, I've finally come to the realization that I've gotta learn how to play a real guitar. Guitar hero is fun, and I KNOW it's totally different that a regular guitar, which is why I want to learn! Plus the songs would just sound better with me shredding away on a real guitar...well in a few years that is!

good for you for wanting to make the leap. *wipes tears* you porbably have developed some decent rhythm skills so i think you probably will do great on a real guitar. at least a lot better than someone with no fingering experience what-so-ever. (hehe, fingering... :P)

if you really want an electric (since most of the songs on those games are songs with distortion i believe) maybe check out the deans and if you have 300 or so an epiphone les paul. (check out musiciansfriend.com)

you can get something with a 10 watt amp and pick up a couple of cheap distortions to give it that metal sound. (i recommend the ibanez distortions cheap and good in my opinion. i also feel the smash box 7 ibanez distortion is better than the boss metal distortion! 20 bucks or so on ebay.)

my favourite thing to do is listen to the samples of distortion pedals like at the boss website and ibanez. ( Premium Link Upgrade )

look under gear and listen to samples of pedals. its quite fun.

keep us posted on what you are thinking about doing! and keep on rocking.

First thing I plan to do is ask my *** if he still has that old guitar of his, and see if I can borrow that. I'll be going to my parents place first part of december, so I'll just ask then. Figure I can learn some basic stuff that way. Then eventually move on to buying an electric with an amp!

sounds like a good plan to me. let me know what u end up with. i think its great that you're taking up the initiative to learn. i have a few helpful site to show you too that i used to use.

Hey Legz; Dr.Death is also very good, PM him!!! My hands way messed up in an industrial accident, no feeling, the Dr's said I needed EXERSIZE!!! OF THE FINGER'S!!! So I got a Kramer Aerostar SX-70 when Eddie Van Halen made it famous, then the company started cheating making them cheap. At least I got a good one. I also have an Fender Electric Acoustic. When I got the Kramer, I got a Peavey Companion Amp. I was totally into music, but not playing, and with not being able to feel the strings, to put it bluntly I got MAD, but, kept at it. If you can listen to a song, start with a slow song that you really like, you can copy it, known as playing by ear, no books needed, just time, and as others have said PRACTICE DUDE, PRACTICE. If you can Hum right now with a slow song, try copying it. BURN that song onto a CD and have it repeat & repeat & repeat, thats by "EAR". You can get Books that can teach you the Scales, Chords, Tabulature, Notes for PICKING, my style!! I like Stevie Ray, his ******* Jimmy Ray, Billy Gibbons, Johnny Cash, George Thorogood, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, also John Fogarty & CCR, what do these have in common, they pick more than chord. Get down to your Video store, pick-up "Roadhouse" with Patrick Swaze, watch Jeff Healy play that Guitar, he's blind. Try Kenny Wayne Shepard, Live On, "Was", try to copy the instrumental. Also CCR "Run Through The Jungle", Johnny Cash's "Cry, Cry, Cry" was a helpfull one for me. Remember you got to start out slow, then work up speed. Old Saying "You Have Crawl Before You Walk, You Have To Walk Before You Can Run". Get one and have some FUN!!!!! Keep us informed Legz!!! Hey, ZZ Top, "She's Got Legs, And She Knows How To Use Them". Go get that puppy and start getting them ends of your fingers ******** so they'll get tough!!!!! Later Legz!! Hey, Get someone to show you how to tune that Guitar using the 5th Fret Method, it's got to be in tune. Don't waste your money on a tuner. If no one near you knows I'll teach you here!!! C-Ya!!

As a guitar player for the better part of 15 years, I say go for the acoustic to start. You don't have to go crazy on the $$, but get something that feels good in your hands. If you don't want to spring for some beginner lessons, get yourself a chord book and just practice basic chords...C,D,E until you get proficient at changing between them with ease. As for songs, download the chords for your favorite (easy) songs and learn to play along with them. This is the way I learned, and built from there. It will be a cheap way to see if you actually enjoy playing and want to stick with it.

If you really have to get an electric...Guitar center has some decent deals on MIM (made in mexico) Fender Strats / Fender Amp combos. I always hear the radio ads for these HUGE DEALS...and you can't go wrong with Fender gear, even the cheap ones as a beginner setup. Hope this helped. PM me if you have any questions...I'm happy to help.

Right On efeezy!! Guitar Center does have those Combo Specials!! And now's just about the best time for they over buy to help-out Santa!!!

No problem. Hey, I have a Keeley Modded Boss DS-1 if anyone is interested. The regular DS-1 is crap, the with the seeing eye mod it's a decent distortion pedal. Vai used to use the same one in his live rig. PM me if interested. I'll sell it cheap.

Ok, so I just picked up the guitar from my ***'s house. It's an acoustic. But whatever. I need links people! Links for whatever you think I can use to learn some ****!

A good idea is to avoid tabs, because if you learn with them you'll find it hard to ever stop.

Much better to learn stuff by ear.

maybe a link to something that shows what fret and what string is what note or something like that? Maybe I'll just fuck around with it some more!
