The story of the Manson Family, the Marcos regime and Adolph Hitler is also quite interesting. That doesn't mean they needs to continue in 2010.

The UK has a great military, a sound democratic system and a prominent position on the World Stage. But talks of Queens and Princes is an complete joke.

I grew up in a Catholic household and I'm the first to point out the hypocrisy and absurdity of tradition. Brits should be on the same wavelength. Imagine if America made it law that a Bush had to hold office...we'd be a bigger laughing stock than we are now.

It's a matter of national pride & in many cases that's the only reason these royal families still exist, since they hardly have any real power left (usually anyway. I don't know how much power the British monarch has)...

I myself would prefer a republic, but a majority of the Dutch people prefers a queen (& future king), who'se upkeep is paid by said people, just so that the queen can cut some ribbons and sit on a throne once a year to read the Speech from the Throne.

I was reading this book called "World War Z", there's a chapter in there that sort of interesting point of view about the monarchy in the UK. I mean, can anybody here disagree that the king and queen staying in the tube that was being used as a bomb shelter with the people and not bolting to Canada during the blitz helped to keep the morale up? You all got a monarchy over there and from my point of view it doesn't seem to be a totalitarian monarchy. They're just heads of state with very little power other than to represent the spirit of their people.

She has the power to unleash a pack of rabid corgis on traitors like George Galloway or to embarrass her subjects with an outfit like the one she wore at the United Nations this week. :shocked:

They get paid millions a year for doing the square root of fuck all. They are a complete and utter waste of time and money. If they want to 'represent the spirit of the UK' they can do it for free, stop hunting endangered species on their huge estates, and stop being such an overall completely out-of-touch with modern society embarrassment.
