Favorite Movie Director All-Time?

Special Operations FOX-HOUND
Robert Zemeckis(Back To The Future trilogy) and Steven Spielberg.

Gotta agree on Marty.

My favorite usually changes often, but Paul Verhoeven is always in my top 5. The Europeon perspective that he brought to his big American movies made them much more then simple action or suspense films. His latest "Black Book" was very good.

I like Cameron Crowe (he did Vanilla Sky and Almost Famous, two of my favorite movies of all time), Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay & Silent Bob, Chasing Amy, etc), Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream), Sam Mendes (American Beauty), and Sam Raimi (Evil Dead). I'm not so much into the hugely popular ones.

couldn't pick just one. but off the top of my head, i'd add Christopher Nolan (batman begins). liked just about everything that he did.

Terry Gilliam is worth mentioning. another one that comes to mind is Luc Beson (the fifth element).

Considering how popular the first 2 Godfather films and Apocalypse Now are I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Coppola?

Honorable mentions:
Mike Nichols (who's afraid of virginia woolf?, catch-22, carnal knowledge, the graduate)
George Roy Hill (butch cassidy, the sting, slaughterhouse-five, etc)
Peter Bogdanovich (yes just about everything else he's done sucks but he did direct one genuine classic)
Mel Brooks (for blazing saddles, young frankenstein & the producers)

Which one? I think several of his early movies are brilliant (especially Paper Moon)

Good choices, bodie!

I must've forgotten to name Altman (a genius).

What your list clearly shows is: The 70s were the last great era of American movie-making. Everything since then sucks. Even the talents of yore lost their touch:

Coppola's star sank after Apocalypse Now, Scorsese's last outstanding effort was King of Comedy (just my opinion, of course... :o), Lumet went into oblivion, Bogdanovich and Nichols became addicted to terrible trash, and so on...

Spielberg has never been of any use ('cept Jaws - another 70s film) and even Woody Allen's last good one is a few years past (Sweet & Lowdown)

I want the 70ies back...!!! :scream:

Don't follow directors, as I don't follow actor/actresses or such.

I find they all might make some or one good film. Then again they might make some or one bad film. They also tend to do various types of films. Some of which I might not go in for, like romance.

A lot of the films people call classic I don't even have much time for like the Godfather films. They just bored the hell out of me. Some films that people consider real turkeys I might like because I'm looking past how much it cost and who it has in it. That it also dragged on too long and was badly directed. I might be looking at what the actual message or story of the film is saying.

But back to directors it's like Woody Allen and Mel Brooks in comedies. I like one or two of Woody's films but hate most. Then with Mel it's the reverse, I like most but hate one or two. I've never found a director I can honestly say I like all his films.

I tend to take the value of films on just that, the film. Not who did it or who's in it. But sometimes that might help, others hinder the film.

What about Match Point? That´s one of the best movies he´s ever done and it came out in 2005.

Actually Nicolas Coquard directed Fifth Element. Luc Besson is mainly a producer for all the films he works on.

His greatest achievement as a director in my opinion is Leon.

Sorry for double post. Mods, do your thing :D
