Nothing special for Christmas eve. I use it as a clean out the fridge day. Make room for the leftovers I get sent home with. Sorry Squally, but it's my brother's house rules. No saving the shrimp. Snooze and lose. Better get there on time.

Did your Asian market have fresh seafood? I never leave mine without a few lbs of shrimp and sea scallops. The prices are 1/3 less than other markets and the scallops are LARGE.

I never usually feel jealous or left out for not celebrating Christmas, but reading what you all plan to eat makes me angry that nobody in my family even considers Christmas Eve worth more than takeout.

what to have on christmas eve?

I've heard children can be very tasty if they're seasoned right. :yummie:

do you guys do special christmas eve dinners too? or just christmas?

That's when the big hubbub happens, on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is a day for cleaning up the mess from the night before. ;)

I made a bourbon pecan pie and currently putting the finishing touches on a rum cake (more glaze). I have a cookie tin of almond crescent cookies for my niece and nephew. Still haven't decided whether my family is coming here or I'm going there. We live less than 30 minutes from each other so it's not a problem.

Ham from Honeybaked; shrimp and cheese grits; Candied sweet potatoes; garlic mashed potatoes; steamed broccoli w/ Hollandaise sauce; collard greens; black-eyed peas; biscuits

yeah. you'd be surprised that its a very decent market. even compared to the ones in l.a. whats awesome is im on friendly terms with one of the guys at the fish counter, so i can trust him to tell me whats up.

he'll tell me straight up if nothing is good that day. and he calls me boss. i like that. i used to shop several times a week there when i was personal cheffing so i built up that relationship.

i got about a pound of shrimp for chow mein, they are always good. and they got some killer scallops but i never get em for just me since my girl doesnt like em.

im excited about all the noodles i got. this time i picked the thinner egg noodles for chow mein. usually i use the thicker ones. these will crisp up more in the wok.

Ham with mustard! And we usually make way too much of it, so it's pretty much the only thing thing we eat before new year :) I'm abroad right now so I had survive with chicken, salad and different cheeses. And that thing with finns and their trees is pretty close to the truth :D

I'm making rib eye, scalloped potatoes, and creamed spinach right now. I'll get the lobster bisque going in a minute.

By the way, I'm pretty buzzed at the moment. :)

Pastacino, rumaki, anisette cookies, wandas (deep fried pastry dough with icing), antipasto, oven roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon and onion (made me a fan of sprouts for life). I was contemplating baked Alaska but I think I'm going to get diabeetus tomorrow.

Last year I brined a turkey for a couple days. That was pretty good, too.

I start soup in the crock pot on the morning of the 24th. It's usually ready about 6pm. I've been making sweets all day and am ready to eat something NOT sweet. ;)
I am currently finishing up the rest of the soup. Love it! YUM

Honeybaked Ham!!! That stuff is incredible. I am in love with their pumpkin pie.

and get seduced.

I read that as "and get sauced."
NO, I haven't had any moscato tonight... yet...

So, in other news we have decided that making the big "traditional" ham and turkey for Christmas dinner is a bad idea. This year no one really wanted it, after having a big lunch with the same type of foods. Unfortunately, no one really wanted all the sweets I made the day before, either. :crying:

We've discussed going out for Chinese food next year, or grilling steaks/chicken and doing sides like potato salad, baked potatoes, baked beans, corn on the cob, etc. :dunno: Guess we have a year to decide.

cant lose either way! we've been trying to do chinese for a couple years now and just havent had the money. this year we were able to finally do it.

the food was amazing. i just not finished off the chow mein. i even had my dad come over to eat some we had so much extra. the guy is a chow mein hound.

we have been eating it since christmas and we still have extras. but you know how good chinese is the next day. as long as you make fresh rice. rice never keeps in the fridge.

You know what? I only recently started eating rice, and I'm really picky about it. We found some jasmine rice and WOW, that stuff is really good!
Also I've never had chow mein. Hubby and I had a conversation about it Monday, as a matter of fact. I will probably have some after I decide to break my diet.

rice is tricky. jasmine is great. i think calrose is also really tasty, its the sticky one.

i also like brown, but thats hardcore. great for diets though.

but..how can you have never had chow mein?!?! im floored!

also.. heres my string beans and my chow mein (before it got tossed).

You've never eaten rice before?

In that case, I highly recommend acquainting yourself with Basmati rice (Indian) and Risotto (Italian). They can be difficult to make (especially Risotto), so order them when you go out in order to taste them first.

And I'm not sure what your diet consists of, but brown rice is better in terms of fiber and nutrients, and it has a lower glycemic index than white rice, so it has fewer carbs and doesn't cause as much of a crash later. Brown rice takes a little longer to cook (closer to 40 minutes) and it does have a peculiar taste compared to white rice, but if you can get used to it, the health benefits are worth the switch.

Also, when either white or brown rice is combined with certain types of beans, you get a complete protein with tons of antioxidants, fiber, etc. Lentils (technically a "pulse," not a bean) are particularly nutritious, and provide all the essential amino acids not found in rice alone.
