Cheap Eats

I was watching Unwrapped on The Cooking Channel just now and they advertised a new show that premiers this week called Cheap Eats. The premise is that this guy named Ali has 12 hours and only $35 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So, that's a break down of around $11.50 per meal. Does that rub anyone else the wrong way? I'm no cheap skate, but almost $12 to pick up sustenance isn't exactly cheap to me. I mean no, it's not fucking Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, but picking some tacos up off the taco truck won't set you back more than $10, and thassa lotta tah-cos, essay. What's it say about society when $12/meal is considered "cheap"?

IT'S THE COOKING CHANNEL! People that think the four food groups are McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's & Arby's don't watch the Cooking Channel!

It's not one or the other. I've got to get to work in 30 min. I'm not going to pull up a recipe from the cooking channel. Stop with you're elitism. You snob.

Hey, I did caveat my post by saying I was watching Unwrapped. Nothing wrong with Unwrapped, but you really missed the point; do you think $12 for a meal should be considered "cheap"? I don't think it's fine fucking dining, but I wouldn't call it cheap, exactly.

$35.00 a day would be enough for three meals and smokes..especially since I won't be buying smokes daily.

I wish a got a $35 daily food stipend, I can eat really fucking cheap, I imagine I would end up pocketing $25/day, easy.

when I first moved out on my own i'd get by on $40 for two weeks worth of groceries. It was mostly limited to mac and cheese, ramen, frozen burritos, generic soft drinks, but it was calories and I loved it dag nabbit.

Since I went low-carb last June I've cut my grocery bill back to about $20/week.

$15 for lunch at the local all you can eat buffet. (dinner is $20)
Some people go there for lunch, eat as much as they possibly can, and not eat again for 24 hours.

I often skip lunch, I eat a big breakfast at home, then supper when I get back home.

I try to eat for less than $3/day if I'm eating at home, and I usually manage. I loathe going out and wasting money on food, my wife, on the other hand, loves her some fried fucking chicken.

You are aware that chicken can be fried at home, and it's a lot cheaper....right? ;)

Not on Tuesdays, two pieces of fried chicken for 99¢ @ at least three fried chicken joints in town. Never mind the fact that I can't and won't eat that shit anymore. Every damn Tuesday it's Chicken Tuesday for my thinks-she's-a-soul sister wife.

tomatoes still expensive here, 2 euros per kg.... :( they should have been 50 cents by now

Didn't Rachael Ray already do this sort of show but with 40 bucks a day?

And yeah, I consider any meal too expensive on the go if its more than 5 bucks. Hell, I consider 5 bucks way too much when you compare it to what you could buy in the market and cook it at home.

$15 a day, five bucks each for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, yeah, that would be "cheap" eats, but I doubt if that would work over here in 'Merica, as a population (like this is a fucking secret) we consume wayyyyy too much at every meal, go to Taco Bell and order over the value menu, that's great, because I can get THAT MUCH MORE for my $20 than if I just ordered off the regular menu. And to the point above about cooking at home, no doubt, I spend $20/week on groceries for myself, my wife easily spends that much per day to feed herself. fucking ridiculous.
