Bill Heard closing local Chevrolet dealerships

yeah they closed the Bill Heard here in Vegas yesterday, no warning at all to the employees just finishing up and get out. I suspect more news of this sort will be comming from all sectors of the economy even with a bailout.

Well, this is probably going to be the end of GM, and will lead to a lot of unemployed Mexicans. The management of the company should be fine despite their terrible decisions over the years. You can now get a great deal on an economical Cadillac I see on TV. Maybe the 40 mile range of the Chevy Volt in 2010 will excite some neurons.

Florida locations also closed yesterday.

Agreed, Detroit automobile industry itself will need a major overhaul if it is to stay in any sort of competitive shape in the future. Ford is even more worse off than GM. A bailout only works if the entities themselves make changes for the future which remains to be seen.

One of the major problems the cars companies have is their health care costs for both current and retired employees.I just shake my head when I hear things on TV (it was probably fox lol) from people saying that due to the current crisis in the economy that universal health care is dead as we won't possibly be able to afford it now.The truth is we can't afford not to go to a single payer universal system as the countries that have that not only have everyone covered they spend 1/2 what we do on health care, but thats our media for ya usually looking out for the corporate interests and misrepresenting the truth. The big 3 are on the other side of that interest now though and will be begging to have the reponsibility of health care taken off them so they can be competetive cost wise again,if they survive long enough.

AFA we could post lots of links about how bad things are couldn't we,I saw unemployment is at highest level in years etc. at yahoo news.

The writing was on the wall in the early 80's for GM Ford and Chrysler. Back then Chrysler was advertising the American way to beat the pump, showing a Japanese man with boxing gloves punching a gas pump. In response to an article in either Time or Newsweek by Lee Iacocca, I wrote back and wondered how that was reasonable as the first VW's known for economy drove off the boat some 30 years earlier and were snapped up by the more thrify among us and attained major popularity, although Chrysler never produced anything close to that as resource savvy.

Chrysler's answer to that and Toyota, Honda and Nissan, was the K-car!

Now it's retro muscle cars and big trucks. :dunno:

I recommend buying a decent bike. Immediately.

A gun too, if you can afford it.

Why is it that "all" of these failing institutions, Lehman Bros, Countrywide and GMAC, to name a few, offering amongst the highest interest rates in the business on 1 year CDs ? -
GMAC -> 4.6 % according to a radio advertisement I heard last night.

I selected Lehman Bros about 3 - 4 months back. We know what happened to them.

Economy claims nation's largest Chevy dealer
BAY AREA (Bay News 9) -- The nation's largest Chevy dealer closed its dealerships - including two in Florida - this week.

Auto retailer Bill Heard Enterprises Inc. announced Wednesday that the company is going out of business. The dealership said in a statement that it didn't have the resources to keep operating, blaming the difficulties on a weak economy with high gas prices and an inventory heavy on SUVs and trucks.

I agree as well. I myself am into muscle cars from the 60's and 70's for collection but they were gas guzzlers back then before that term really had any meaning. The SUV's today in some cases even get worse mileage then some of the muscle cars from the 60's. There is honestly no reason why the automakers can not get an engine to get 50 or 60 miles to the gallon (maybe not overnight but it is doable). I saw a GM commerical a while ago and the jist of it was dont save money on a economy car, buy a SUV that you need and we will give you gas money for a year! Essentially advertising a endless cycle of horrendous gas consumption.

I just saw a ticker on CNN that said GM is selling it's plant in France and also the Hummer division. I can't find a link on my newsserver.

It's good to be the king...
With Congress preoccupied with the massive, $700 billion bailout plan for the financial industry, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler have finally secured Part One of their own federal rescue plan. A bill set to be passed by Congress and signed by President Bush as early as this weekend—separate from the controversial Wall Street bailout plan—includes $25 billion in loans for the beleaguered Detroit automakers and several of their suppliers. "It seemed like a lot when we first started pushing this," says Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, one of the bill's sponsors. "Suddenly, it seems so small."

it's zeitgeist

Agreed, but one should never assume the populace actually knows a word. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeitgeist

You can lead the people, or alienate the people. I hate to quote scientology.. but early on in dianetics it states that the roadblock to learning or understanding is that people will come across a word or two they dont know and keep going. The bible (all of them, save for my Torah since it often includes opinions and explanations) should have subnotes, definitions.. everything.. to prevent assholes from taking conservative positions on matters they didnt even read right in the first place.

Oy, if I had a dollar for every idiot that read something and adopted a religion based on sentences or 'scriptures' that appealed to their ailing mind! muh-shuh-guh-nah!

You, know I'm thinking I need a bailout too. I need one in case I don't make enough money to pay for the luxury items I want to buy or if I can't pay my taxes. Who else can I turn to?

I dropped phone service with BellSouth when I noticed the basic bill went up $1.50 a month, (on top of other BS charges, like $20 for dropping one name on the bill). The fine print mentioned a surcharge and googling this I found the $1.50 monthly was for a phone company fund, that in case they didn't make as much money during a natural disaster, this would guarantee they would still generate the same income.

I guess some of our legislators thought this was a great idea to let it pass.

Zeitgeist is climate of the times. I know of it in relation to the notion that Hitler was in the right place at the right time.

Let me be the first here to say " I never heard of him".

I do however feel for the people who will lose their jobs ,except for the car salesman.
I have never met an honest one yet, been fuck around by many, lied to, and even came within millimeters of scraping with one punk.
For them I have no pity what so ever, let them now go find jobs where their not trying to stick it up someones ass.

Yes, I dated someone who was a sales person. BS'd everyone I knew including me. It sounded good at the time.
