Best FPS game?

bioshock, not your traditional FPS but story blows everything else away and action is really good too

CounterStrike hands down! Screw those Microsoft imatator wannabees! Halo is basically Unreal Tournament but slower and less bloody. All they did was basically copy the Unreal Engine and modify it to make it their own...lame! Get a life!

COD4 by a land slide

clearly everyone is forgetting about Goldeneye on Nintendo 64
It was indeed kickass. And godlike multiplayer.

The original Metroid Prime is one of my favorites, but I'd rather categorize it as a platformer-adventure that happened to be first-person.

The best FPS is Half-life.
You can argue that Doom was the first or that COD4 is the next big deal. In the end though, Half-life gave new life to the genre. Not necessarily because of the awesomeness of the actual Half-life game - but rather because of what it spawned. Team Fortress, Deathmatch, Day of Defeat and Counter-Strike for example. I've spent so many hours playing stupid Half-life mods because they offer such enjoyable multiplayer. COD is a great game (in my opinion boring, but I won't deny its qualities) but it owes a lot to Half-life. As does most of the FPS-franchises today.

And don't even get me started on Half-life 2...

Is Half-Life like truly amazing?..I got it, but I got the orange box...is Half-Life2 the last one so far?
Like I said the first Half-life was great, and still is. But the real reason why I think HL is the best FPS is because of the numerous mods it spawned, and its attitude towards 3rd party modding. It's like the Warcraft III for FPS-games.

Half-life 2 I think was even better as a game, but not as influential and revolutionary. The Orange Box contains Half-life 2 and the two expansion packs episode one and two (which are significantly shorter.) Episode three will be the last one and is yet to be released.

I've gotta give my love & props up to Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament to a slightly lesser extent (it more or less just refined a few things). These games set the tide mark for online fragging. Everyone trying to outdo w/e current FPS is popular is actually trying to outdo these ones.

There's a lot of FPS that blow me away in graphics, but none can take away the pure awesomness of Golden Eye for the N64. If I'm around any of my close friends and mention it we would talk about it for a good 30 mins.

Favorite Modes:
- Rocket Launchers only in the smallest stage
- Bomberman: Motion and Remote Mines only
- Knife/Throwing knifes

Other than that I always enjoyed Bio Shock and Half Life 1 + 2. Great story and unique weapons.

Half Life 1 & 2, and by extension pretty much everything else from Valve (TFC, Left 4 Dead, Portal, etc), are pure awesomeness. Doom, Quake, etc are great games, but I find little desire to play more than a level or two, just to shoot stuff for a while. Half Life can keep me hooked from start to finish, even after completing it a hundred times before. There's more to them than just being shooters, there's great storytelling there too (even if it is a cliched plot, it's well presented), and it's not restricted to Half Life - Portal surprised me by not only being a fun puzzle game but having a really good story to it as well.

Bioshock actually disappointed me. System Shock 2, from the same developers, tread similar ground 8 years earlier and in my opinion did it better.

There are games which of course revolutionized the genre but as for most recent efforts in my opinion would have to be the halo series and gears of war.

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
I don't know about it being the best, but I'd say Golden Eye. In my adolescence, many a day after school was spent playing multiplayer in my parent's basement. Good times, I'll always be fond of that game!

For action and tension:

Call of Duty 2 [PC and XB360 as they are the same version].
Call of Duty 4.

For really good atmosphere and just the right amount of action:

Half Life: The Orange Box.
Far Cry [PC].
Return to Castle Wolfenstein [PC].

For atmosphere lone:

F.E.A.R.
F.E.A.R Files.
F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin.
