I voted for Ray Combs mainly due to the fact I grew into the show as he was the host and enjoyed it a great deal with the rest of my family over dinner or chill out time while growing up. In all actuality I should have voted for Dawson though, I know.....
Like I've said before, the show was created for Dawson because he was quite popular on Match Game & essentially owned the bonus game! Family Feud was actually an offshoot of the "Audience Match" portion of the Match Game Bonus Game. So, the show was tailor made for Richard Dawson & he did not disappoint.....at least during his 1st tenure as host anyway.
Now, the show went off the air for a few years, and it was brought back with Ray Combs as host. Richard Dawson was not brought back because he basically burned some bridges the 1st time around (both at the end of his time as a guest on Match Game, and toward the end of his 1st tenure as host of Family Feud), he had some "issues" with drinking, and they didn't want to have anything to do with him! Now, toward the end of Combs' tenure as host, the ratings started to take a dip, and during this time Mark Goodson (one of the show's creators) died (he was the one who REALLY wanted absolutely nothing to do with Dawson anymore). Well, someone got the "bright" idea to bring back Dawson (as Goodson wasn't around anymore anyway) to drive up the ratings. Well, from the time that Dawson had last done the show, to that time Dawson had....let's just say "put on some weight" (picture William Shatner today)! They hashed out the plan to replace Combs with Dawson & Richard Dawson agreed to their stipulation that he seriously loose some weight! Well, not only did he not lose any weight....he even ballooned up even more! Anyone who remembers Richard Dawson's 2nd tenure as host will remember he wasn't the same guy as he was the 1st time around!
Well, needless to say Ray Combs did not take being replaced as host very well, much less by the very man who's shadow he had worked under in the 1st place! Being replaced by Richard Dawson was the ultimate slap in the face! Following the conclusion of taping on his last show as host in 1994, Ray Combs didn't stick around and left the studio immediately and never looked back! That was the beginning of a sadly brief downward spiral in Ray Comb's life. A few months later, to add insult to injury, Ray was seriously injured (spinal) in a car accident & had to go through rehabilitation, but he was left in constant pain. If that wasn't enough, he also went through financial problems after two of his comedy clubs failed and his Hamilton, Ohio, home was foreclosed. Then in 1995, Combs and his wife of 18 years, Debbie, with whom he had six children, separated. The couple reconciled but later refiled for divorce. He tried to get a regular gig on television multiple times, but nothing stuck.
Then, on June 1, 1996 (a mere 2 years after he was replaced on Family Feud), police were called to Combs' home over reports of a disturbance. Combs had reportedly destroyed the inside of his home and had also been banging his head against the walls. Shortly after police arrived, Combs' estranged wife Debbie arrived and informed police that Combs was suicidal and had spent the previous week in the hospital for a suicide attempt. Combs was then admitted to the psychiatric ward of Glendale Adventist Medical Center and placed on a 72-hour mental observation hold. On Sunday, June 2, 1996, sadly Ray Combs committed suicide by removing the sheets from his bed and using them to hang himself in the closet of his hospital room.
Was this Richard Dawson's fault? Of course not! Is Richard Dawson BY FAR the GREATEST host The Family Feud ever had? ABSOLUTELY! My only problem with Dawson is that he never should have accepted the gig the 2nd time around, because, based upon his appearance and performance that 2nd time around (he didn't kiss the female contestants anymore either), he didn't even take the job seriously! Dawson the 2nd time around was about as bad as Louie Anderson....and that is saying something! And, in no small way, his taking that gig another time helped to literally destroy the life of Ray Combs. The ratings did bounce back with Dawson the 2nd time as expected, until the audiences saw how lousy he was this time....and the show was canceled shortly after he took the gig again anyway.
Anyway, now you know the rest of the story of Ray Combs, Richard Dawson, and The Family Feud! Of course Richard Dawson (the 1st time around) owned that show.....that isn't even remotely open for debate! Incidentally, Richard Dawson actually ended up marrying a contestant from the show during his 1st tenure as host!
