Hey everyone, I thought I'd try starting a thread about the little differences between countries, so wherever you're from, the US, Brazil, Australia, Europe, anywhere, if you're puzzled by our British ways, or words that mean something else, post here and us UK guys will try to help you out. In return I hope to find out a few things myself, such as what is an English Muffin, and why do the Ozzies say "Ute" instead of pickup or truck. So get posting, let's find out about each other! :glugglug: :wave2:

It's not a trick question. Good for you on your healthy choice. I don't have that vice.

I do love that dry British humor.

why are sausages called bangers?
why are panties called knickers?
How far is Victoria Beckhams head up her own ass (arse in Brit) ?
What the hell does "blimey" mean ?
What does bollocks have to do with Bullshit ?
And wanker...great term for the world to use...man that's brilliant!

whatever happened to Benny Hill, I miss those awesome upskirts :crying:

Damned if I know on the first two, but with Victoria, I'd say at least up to her waist. :1orglaugh
Blimey means good grief or holy smokes, and bollocks is a rude way of saying testicles (or balls, I suppose).

Oh, and I think Benny Hill died quite a while back. :crying:

Does anybody use the words "apartment" and "elevator" in England, or are they solely called "flats" and "lifts"?

Sausages are called bangers (slang, not official!) because if you don't prick them they can explode. Not like C4 explode, but 'bang' open...

Knickers/panties...dunno. They were called knickers in Britain before they were called panties in America, though.

Victoria Beckham is a living example of female insecurity. She is not popular with the general population.

Blimey = A euphemism for "God blind me", which is blasphemous. Back in the day, blasphemy was worse than swearing, so euphemisms for these exclamations came about. Also, "Crikey" is a euphemism for "Christ Almighty".

Bollocks = testicles, which is a bad thing. It can be both a noun or an adjective. However, the 'Dog's Bollocks' means something is brilliant. Why, I have no idea.

As for wanker...yes, it's a great word. Just in case anyone doesn't know, wanking = masturbation.

How did the use of the phrase or letter "Q" come to mean waiting in line?

If they do use those words, they should be deported to America!

I've not heard anybody use those terms...yet. But then I have well educated friends...

How did the use of the phrase or letter "Q" come to mean waiting in line?

That's "Queue".

Etymology: French, literally, tail, from Old French cue, coe, Latin cauda, coda

That one is confusing... so I can say bollocks (balls) and offend someone or say dog balls and compliment them???:confused::confused:

I thought Bollocks was a department store in the US.

Umm...yes. You wouldn't say to someone "You are the dog's bollocks" usually. You'd say "My mobile phone is the dog's bollocks", for example. Don't say "Dog's balls", though - without the 'bollocks', it loses it's meaning.

"Bollocks" can be an exclamation or an adjective. If someone said they'd banged the Queen you'd shout "Bollocks!", and also if your car broke down you'd say it was bollocks. Bollocks could refer to the car, the situation, or both. "Bollocks" is most commonly used to infer someone is talking bollocks (telling a lie).

Hey, we have these funny rules just to confuse you guys!

Sometimes people will say apartment to mean an expensive, large flat in a good location. Like on the TV show "Frasier". The ones on "Friends" would be called flats.

An elevator is a machine on a farm used to lift haybales into a shed or barn, and describes some other industrial machines too.
