Do Englishmen wear Bowlers today?

In London you still see a few bowler hats now and again - in the City at the Lloyds Building. Sometimes complete with pin stripes and black umbrella. :hatsoff:

But it's just a fun tradition that a few insurance brokers indulge once in a while. They generally disappeared in the 1970s.

I think Bowler Hats disappeared around the same time as John Cleese's 'Ministry of silly walks' sketch on Monty Python. :hatsoff:

fag or faggot wouldn't work at all really...

as fag=cigarette
and faggot=meatball type thing

But I guess if you called someone a fag.... hmmm dunno I'll have to try it.

I believe (no personal experience) that 'Fag' was actually a derisory term used in colleges such as Oxford and Cambridge.
It wasn't necessarily a term for 'homosexual', it was used to describe a lower year boy who was 'employed' to run around doing errands for a higher year boy... something of a slave.
I think the whole 'homosexual' thing came about simply because of it being an 'all-male' environment and it was just a way of non-collegers to have a pop at the upper-class twits who were in the colleges... ie the 'Fags' were thought to be sex-slaves or something.

Oh, well thats good to know lol...

I learnt from a girl that lives in Isle of Man that the ferry that goes across is like 3 hrs long and costs like 300 pounds...

Reason I wanna go to Isle of Man is cuz o' her and the TT in the summer... :D Wouln't mind tourin england before headin over though...

I can see the Isle of Man on a clear day, from where I live... not much to see, except mountains.

I have a question for British folks.

Q: Do you think a lot of my posts are blinkered, or are you chuffed to bits when you read them?

Sorry, I never read them...

We all know that a lot of British people become angry when an American is cast for a British role, or when an American "puts on" a British accent. Are there any British televison actors that play the part of an American bad or good?

Three that spring to mind are Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver in the Riches and Hugh Laurie in House. I'm sure there are many others though

If I had to list the sports in America(based on popularity) it would go something like this:

1. FOOTBALL (NFL)
2. NASCAR
3. BASEBALL
4. BASKETBALL
5. HOCKEY
6. MMA
7. GOLF
8. BOXING
9. TENNIS
10. then maybe SOCCER?
What makes football(soccer) so exciting? I dont know one American that likes the sport. I love to play soccer, but its just a pain to watch. It like a religion everywhere else.

Please explain?

I'll have a go at explaining why football is so exciting although it boils down to 1 simple point IMHO. A game can be won or lost in 1 second with 1 goal.

Take basketball... IMHO the most pointless, boring game EVER. Squillions of points scored and all so that 1 team can win by 2 points. When your team does a "slam-dunk" its a cheap thrill for a few seconds.... until the opposition go poncing up the court for their turn to score... OOOH and don't touch him... that's a foul. Naughty naughty.

In football you can have a rubbish game or a great game and 1 goal could decide it all. That goal could get scored after 20 seconds or in the final minute.

That's about it really..

Hugh Laurie of House - Absolute unadulterated perfection.

All others have occasional subtle clues to tip you off. Nobody does it better than Hugh. In fact, we correct our accents based on his instructions.

What people from the UK do other people around the world like while you hate them, and you can't understand why? :1orglaugh

Sorry, I've read that a few times and still don't understand it. Are you asking why British people sleep with foreigners? :helpme:

I think you've answered your own question, soccer really is like a religion. Perhaps because it'e been around for so long, hundreds of years before the other sports you mentioned, and has become embedded in the culture in the countries where it is played, kind of like brainwashing really.

As for the enjoyment part, I don't understand either. I don't have a "sheep" personality, I'm not religious, I don't follow trends and I'm open to new ideas, which may be why I prefer newer lesser known (in this country) sports, my favorites being Nascar, Baseball, Football and Hockey. :wave2:

This might come off wrong, but, how greedy are Brits?

i find that most Americans in general are some greedy sons-a-bitches that can never have enough of anything, especially money.

For example,I have a friend who has a house full of "stuff",and the more he gets, the more he wants. He's never satisfied and he works multiple jobs just to get more stuff. The problem,to me at least,is that since he's always working,he can never really enjoy all of his toys like he really wants to.It's nothing but sheer greed and the fact of saying "yeah I have this and I have that" and nothing more.

If there were an actual means to an end then I would get it,but like I said,it's never enough.

I'll do me best Gov'na! :hatsoff:

What he means is:
"Can you think of any famous people that are well liked in other parts of the world but despised in Britain to such a degree that it perplexes you?"
