czsmith had it right. Really unfortunate news.

Last GM big block engine rolls off the line

The Big Block. Rat Motor. Call it what you will, we can now officially add a final epitaph to the long-running engine's gravestone: R.I.P. The final L18 big block rolled down the assembly line at General Motors' Tonawanda plant in New York last week, and that engine was signed by all the workers at the plant and is on its way to the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

The first big block Chevy engine was introduced way back in 1958 and was used in both passenger cars and trucks. The engine's legacy includes such classic nameplates as Chevrolet Impala, Chevelle, Camaro and Corvette with displacements ranging from the venerable 396, 409, 427 and 454 to, finally, the 496-cubic-inch Vortec 8100 that ended the production run.

Naturally, the death of the big block brings with it other casualties as well, such as the 150 laid off hourly workers that are hoping GM sees fit to bless them with a new powerplant to build along with the RV and marine industries.

I go to Ashely, IN all the time for work.

I drive a VW GTI, lowered, wheels and a bunch of mods. I guess I'm one of those tuner guys.

I didn't now that. So does that mean there will be no more Corvettes with 427's? I've never ridden in one, but the 2008 Z06 was a pretty impressive performer on paper.

The 505HP LS7 in the 2005+ C6 Z06 is a small block 427 Based off the LSx platform, more specificly the 4th gen SBC.

And you all are aware the the BBC was non-existent in production vehicles from the late 70s til the early 2000s, yes? And when they did come back they were absolute garbage. I disgrace to the BBC name, if you will. For instance, the 8.1L 496ci (RPO L18) in the 3/4 ton and bigger light/medium duty GM commercial trucks. 8.1L and 496ci, that's got to make insane power, right!!! Wrong. They ranged from a whopping 225hp to neck breaking 340hp.... Kinda anti-climatic huh? There are Honda and Toyota motors that make more power, ouch. Not to mention that they were only 2 bolt mains.

I wouldn't be getting to upset over the ending of the latest run of "BBCs" (if you even want to call them that). I'd moch rather remember the BBCs from back in the day, like the 427 aluminum block ZL-1 in the COPO Camaro's that was rated at 425, but actually made more like mid 500bhp...

If it's going in a truck, there are different considerations other than peak horsepower output, you know what they are.

"There are Honda and Toyota motors that make more power, ouch."

Not really unless you want to bring up the NSX, turbocharged Supra or turbocharged 300zx. Because we're talking about the mid 90s here. But they weren't designed for hauling heavy stuff around were they?
